De-Rigging Kyosho Seawind
« on: July 16, 2009, 07:02:13 pm »

Hi Guys, I hope you will bear with me as I am new to this Forum lark. I recently bought a Ready built Kyosho Seawind yacht (very well built and finished off). Apart from removing the ballast and rudder for transport I have not as yet de-rigged it as I am not confident that the "snaprings" used for securing the shrouds to the hull are robust enough to keep removing.
Have any of you yachtsmen had any experience with this boat and are there any other clips/snaprings on the market that are easier to unfasten and are more robust.

I use a fishing snap similar to this. However I do find them devilishly fiddly and need three hands to rig the thing. It was the best of a bad job in my local fishing tackle shop. Be pleased to see a better solution from someone.

I have snap rings on all 3 of my sail boats, as supplied by the manufacturer.

They are plenty strong enough. I have never had one break. Consider this, if they were not up to the job the manufacturers, like Kyosho, would not supply them.

The downside, as Bee mentions, is that they are fiddly. The only recommendation I can make is to buy the largest in the fishing tackle shop.

Thanks for your replys gents, I guess you are right in saying that Kyosho wouldn't use items that didn't work.....but they are so small and fiddly to operate and my fingers are not as nimble as they used to be.
I think that I will investigate the fishing tackle snap clips angle to see if they are any better.

They are fidley. If I was going to de-rig regularly I would keep as pair of long nose pliers in my bag to do the job.

There are quick release fitting used on the IOMs you can get these from www.sailsetc.com but they are not cheap.

Thanks for that tigertiger, I visited the 'sailsetc' website and you are not wrong about them being expensive.

I do have two small pairs of pointed nose pliers which I will keep in my kit box but I guess that the best course
of action is to de-rig as infrequent as possible.

Cheers. :-))

With some boats, if you just slacken of the bowsies, the mast will lie down with rigging still attached.

All the Seawinders in our club do not de-rig their yachts when finished sailing as they are devils to
get tuned again for the next session. They drop the keel & take them home as they are. Saves a lot
of fiddling about.

Thanks Nemesis I was gradually coming to that conclusion myself. Dropping the keel and removing the rudder to avoid damage
could possibly be the best solution. I am the only Seawinder in our club so it's a case of learning by mistake or turning to the experienced guys on 'mbm'.

Be very careful with the little catches that hold the hatch on, the ones that turn halfway, as they
tend to be fragile & have a tendency to break. Also if you are new to the game it may pay to fit a
forestay because if the Snap on the jib attachment goes you drop the whole rig, happy sailing,

Thanks Nemesis,I didn't actually build this Seawind I bought it from an ex-member of our club and he did a hatch modification which does not use the half turn catches so it is also virtually watertight.

As far as fitting a forestay that seems a really good idea. How do the Seawinders at your club attach the forestay to the deck as I am not sure how strong the hull is in that area? I would appreciate any comments.

Hello from Veracruz, México

Please, don't worry about it, I sail my Seawind in real strong wind, at the sea and I have not any break part of the rigging, I just wash it with clear water in order to save fron the salt.
Best wishes

Thank you for that information Godo, it's nice to hear from a fellow sailor all the way from Mexico.
