Revolving gun mount
« on: August 08, 2009, 09:55:56 pm »

Hi,

I am looking to add to a model, a radar controlled gun mount which would be able to rotate 90 degrees either way from the centre line. I would guess I would be using a standard servo but cannot work out how to adapt it owing to the size of the mounting which will be circular.

I would be interested in hearing  what methods  some of you more experienced modelers use in making turrets.  I can work out how best to tackle my problem.

Look forward to constructive advise.

1st thought is 2:1 gearing, either gears or pulleys and an elastic band.

I used gearing to increase the arc but this brought its own problem by doubling the servo speed. Thus my answer was gearing plus a 'servo slow' unit.  Hope this helps.

I used a servo mounted upside down with a meccano pulley where the servo arm normally goes, a similar pulley mounted under the gun and a normal meccano belt, then I got one of these to control it

Have you tried one of Action Electronic's - "Servomorphs"    http://www.action-electronics.co.uk/    or you could email Dave with the contact link at the bottom of their web page. It will require you purchasing a sail winch servo in order to get the arc you want.  Warning, don't buy one of those cheap copies made in the Republic of China, stick to either "Futaba" or "Hitech"

Good luck

Pete.....just relate back to your real life version.......

1) think of the turret as a box on deck level with the ordinace [barrel] protruding or sticking out
2) imagine the magazine as a cylinderical device attached to & on axis with the turret, but lower down in the bowels of the vessel
3) it is a simple task to motorise the magazine as offered by other members

One point of consideration.......... :}...you only intend to have a 180 degree of arc of fire  {:-{ ......most A, B, X or Y turrets would have approx 225 degrees A of F ....after all.... the limitation is simply to ensure some  %% sailor dosn't shoot the bridge or aft smoke stack {-)

This subject has a previous thread.....try a search..........Derek  :-))

I would suggest a P96 - well,  I would wouldn't I :-)

This will allow you to up the swing of the servo to the limits of the servo - this will give you up to 180 degrees of swing. If you gear this on the turret by 2x then you will be able to set the swing as large as you want and where you want.
