Model Idea . . . Multipacket
« on: August 25, 2009, 05:05:29 pm »

Hi all.
I read something the other night about a proposed design of cargo ship called the Multipacket.  It consisted of a stern section containing the engine, all the ships controls, crew accommodation etc., that was detachable from the main hull of the ship.

The idea being that the ship could dock and the stern would be detached and connected to an already waiting hull section.  This way it would be able to set out almost immediately back to sea without waiting for its initial cargo to be unloaded and reloaded with its next.  The main hull it had brought in would then be unloaded in a more casual manner than usual.

The purpose of all this was to cut costs – The most costly part of the ship could spend more time actually at sea, the ports could operate more efficiently, (apparently), better crew efficiency etc.  It was also proposed that the main hull sections could be of different size and type depending on the type of cargo to be carried, containers, bulk, fuel etc.  Thus the ‘ship’ would not be limited to carrying one type of cargo.

A casual search of the internet turned up only one reference to this proposed design in a document dated 1967.  I assume the design was never built or used.
I did think it might make an interesting model though.  Perhaps  a stern section and a couple of different hulls, radio controlled, and operated showing the changeover from one hull to another

Any thoughts or further information about this design already known by anyone?

Regards Macey

an interesting idea.............I wonder if the stern unit would be self propelled or would need assistance from a tug of some sort. This idea opens up some new possibilities for docking!!

I seem to recall a design which used a separate bow and stern section with the cargo sections in the middle. When the cargo sections were removed the bow would be connected to the stern as otherwise the stern section would have had a very blunt bow!

Colin

There was mention of a 'common' bow section but no description of how the system was supposed to operate apart from that the sections were connected at deck level by  a hinge!!

Are you thinking of the ss Connector built in 1863? That had hinged sections to help it ride the waves more easily. I don't know if they were detachable though.

Sounds like the 'V notch' system. In this case a 'tug' is designed to run in the V notch of a barge. The two become, operationally one unit. The tug can cut out any time to pick up another barge with an appropriate notch.

Just got this off the web. Not much there though.

Article Abstract:

Information is presented on Taiwanese shipEs engineer Bill Wen Chang HuangEs improved and patented hinge technology for ultra large container ships. The concept involves the construction of a ship as two or more separate parts and then joining them together using a huge hinge.

Yes, I've heard of that too but I don't think it was intended to be an ocean going rig.

I'm sure its not the SS Connector - when i get back from work later I'll have another look. Its from a book dated early eighties, I'm sure it was being suggested as something 'new' at that time.

Any ideas then where to start with a model? Start with a known design of cargo ship maybe?

And a saw  :-)) :-))

Like Colin I have heard of this idea, but not sure where. I shall search. But as a model you could do a scale course from both ends, meet in the middle, finish the course, get huge amouts of points and confuse the hell out of the judges :D :D

Ok - A little bit more - the info I have comes from a book dated 1972 - and is given as a new idea by Hay and Smart (Projects) Ltd naval architects.

Any coupling will be a weak spot.  Having a deliberate weak spot in an ocean going vessel between the accommodation/engine section and the rest of the hull, given what happened to the MV Derbyshire, is not a good idea.
It was probably squashed on economical grounds when someone worked out just how much cost and downtime would be involved in coupling and uncoupling as opposed to having it sit there for loading/unloading.
