Steamech engine query
« on: September 09, 2009, 12:33:15 pm »

Having purchased the laser cut bits and plans to make this engine many moons ago, there seems to be a problem with the plans.

http://www.steamech.com/marine-engine-model.htm

On page 3 of the plans there is a rather critical measurement missing. That is the height of the bottom of the bearing block to the centre of the bearing.

It doesn't help that the whole plan is a mixture of imperial and metric, including some fixings.

I have tried contacting, but never any reply.

I know these were being copied by some far eastern company and being sold on ebay. I was wondering if someone could get me that measurement so I can update my planset.

Many thanks

Martin,

No it isn't the same, that one you have shown has a totally different valve gear and bottom end build up, but thanks anyway.

What would the world be like if we all liked and did the same thing? Everyone to his own.

With regards to this problem, if needed, I will guesstimate a measurement, and hope there is enough adjustment around the engine to get it into correct timing etc. But it is always nice to have the right thing available.

Hi Bogs,

Can you back the dimension out by adding the  piston rod, crosshead and conrod length to the crank throw and then subtract out the lower cylinder head and standard height?   That should get you to the center of the crank....plus half a crank journal diameter.......what's left if that dimension....I think

Probably a threaded piston rod which would complicate such a measurement....

Just thinking out loud

Bogs

With the drawing on the screen of my computer I took a piece of paper and put tick marks for the width of the part. Then moved down and put a tick mark at the height of the part. moving back up to the width it looks to be half the width or 3 mm. I'm guessing that 3mm would word just fine.

Gents,

Many thanks for the words of advice, and I am sure what you have suggested will get me very close to what I need. It is not the end of the world if it isn't exactly right, but KNOWING it is right from the start, instills confidence when you start to make the thing. I have yet to do a mental build of the engine, but I am sure other things will crop up when I get deeper into it.

What really worries me though, is how Steamech have reacted.

They were very quick to tell me when the laser cut parts were back in stock, from a query I placed with them about six months before, and to send me the plans, anything to get money from me, but cannot be bothered to reply when I have a small query such as this.

How would a complete newbie cope with something like this? Most probably panic and give up on the job, or make a total mess of it.
