Self Righting Lifeboats
« on: September 10, 2009, 03:29:55 pm »

I heard a little kid at the lakeside on Saturday ask if his rtr lifeboat would self right like the real ones do. He was told 'no', but it set me thinking. Can model lifeboats be made self righting?

At the RNLI open Days at the weekend, they were demonstrating the self righting principle using one of the RTR Severns

Intriguing. Can a detailed r/c model be made self righting? The model in the video looks fairly basic, but perhaps it was fully detailed before it went out into that sea!

The video was of sea trials so no detailing was added until this was complete. detailing and self righting  can be done, but as with the real things (but not always) you will loose your aerials and possibly some stanchions and smaller items of detail. Keep in mind the purpose of this is to save lives in the wheel house and keep engines dry to make a safe return home. If not too much damage is done on the run out then to carry on the mission/rescue at hand.

Yes, Two members of Tynemouth M B Club did this with their Aruns way back in the 70s/80s,
They manually turned them over, the boats did not like & it took a lot of effort to get them to capsize.
We did this about 4 or 5 times & then blasted them up & down the lake, they  took in about 1/2 pint water which was not bad considering what they had been through. Arun were 52 class 1" to 1ft.

Pictures of a self righting Severn

http://www.lifeboatmodels.co.uk/selfrighting.htm

This one was on the pool at at the RNLI open days last weekend and it was rolled over more than 30 times over the weekend and only took on about a pint of water.

It's also been on the TV on the Discovery channel.

No reason that topside detail can't be tossed about....

Okay, it's a springer, but it does self right itself..

There is also this little Gif sequence of a 44ft model getting rolled... look about 1/3 down the page....

I took part in the making of a tv programme a few years ago called "massive engines" the Severn in the link in a previous post was in the same programme and it does self right, very clever.
