U-141 Scratch Built Type 2D
« on: September 17, 2009, 02:32:10 pm »

Hi,
Here is my first submarine, scratch built 1:40 Scale Type 2D.
I found on researching the Type 2 boats that U-141 had the 8 dark stripes as camouflage,
and had a devil riding a torpedo as the emblem on the corning tower.

The hull is a one off, balsa/bass wood covered with 5 layers fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin.
I then opened up the boat at the waterline and took out all the wood etc.
The boat is powered with a single 6 volt 4.5 amp hr lead acid battery, gives me about an hour and a half.
Dual geared Aeronaut 6 volt motors provide sufficient power for the sub.

I have used the simplest system possible, where I use a 6 volt air pump
drawing air in from the periscope into the ballast tank to bring the boat up.
Trick is to have the periscope above the water. The pump can handle air and water- no problem
Pumps can be had from Caswell Plating.

I have a 4" dia 4" long lexan ballast tank  where I have installed a propel failsafe back up system.
The boat runs beautifully!
Best Regards,
Desi

Desi,

Very nice boat,  I think you chose wisely, the colors/pattern looks great.  I also would be very interested in seeing photos of your U-141's innards

Hi All,
Shall post a couple of pics of the guts of the boat.

The boat drives beautifully, and is very stable.
Given my limited knowledge of building and running a sub...

Keep everything above the waterline as light as possible, makes for less ballast to take on and get rid off.
Get all the weight/lead as low as possible in the boat.
Take you time in building the WTC...

KEEP IT SIMPLE:)

Hi All,
Innards of the boat as requested-
I have tried to identify the main parts and the operation of the boat

All the best with all your builds!

Desi,

what are the dimensions of your boat (length)?  I am guessing somewheres around 110cm?   very clean installation

Desi,

Great build. A question, well 2 questions, the pump, is it one of those multi diaphragm type pumps?

You mentioned propel gas, is that the airbrush bottled air?

Hi Ian,
Yes, the pump, is it one of those multi diaphragm type pumps from

http://www.caswellplating.com/

That is air brush propellant, or air duster

Excellent work Desi, nice to see a Type2D built from the ground up as it is not a common model. Good to see you chose the 2D and didn't take the easier way out by building it's predecessors.  I love the hull shape of the Type2.
Lot of work gone into that boat by the looks of things.
