For those into steam
« on: November 24, 2006, 01:46:56 pm »

With the demise of Cheddar models a couple of year's ago, and what seems like the truthful fact that Stuart Turner is NOT going to continue manufacture of any of the marine plants, which they promised would be be continued, it would seem that the only suppliers left are ACS (with their 'Puffin' copy),  JMC and Anton (in France), and Reiger (in Germany).

However, John Hemmens, although he doesn't advertise as he used to, is still in operation, and not as some may think retired.
Personally I find his boilers the finest that money can buy, and the verticals fabulously detailed and finished if used in an open launch, and his 'Richmond' V twin engine has just been tested as plant for my 65 inch steam yacht, and has proved adequatly  powerful for the job.

He can be reached on e-mail: [email protected]. and his website, which at present is being updated, will again be: www.steamengines.co.uk.  Also, with the 'Lady Jane' and 'Chimera' kits ,(now ready as all wood kits, rather than grp hulls which lower the ultimate value of a finished model), he will be taking out a full page announcement in Model Boats early in 2007.

At the Warwick Model Engineering show recently, Stuart had the Cheddar Marine plant together with the boiler control electronics on display. When asked for pricing and delivery they said these should be available before Christmas - this year I think ;)

By the strangest of coincidences, I had a phone call only a couple of hours ago from Stuarts themselves on this very subject. Among other things, the call was to let me know about the progress thay are making with the designs they took over from Cheddar, after that company's demise last year. They still insist that they are going to do this, starting they hope with the Puffin, Plover and Gemini. Apparently they are still getting hold of costings etc, and their vague "in a couple of months or so" sounded a bit optimistic to me. I pointed out that there was no mention of anything Cheddar on their website, and was told not unreasonably, that they weren't going to do much to publicise new products until they actually had them in production. So no progress yet, but at least they sounded fairly serious. Watch this space. They promised me full info as soon as they'd got their act together, so I can only promise to pass on any news as I receive it.
