New guy on the block
« on: October 30, 2009, 11:28:37 pm »

Hi everyone, my name is David and i am fairly new to the world of model boats.
It has only started recently as i am a model flier by passion and wanted something to occupy me while the winter months prevent me from flying.
I rescued a 1950's scratch built (i think) river cruiser in rather sorry state and gave it the kiss of life.
I was rather surprised by the enjoyment i had in seeing this hull become a boat and was even more surprised by the sheer enjoyment i had of seeing it sail around a nearby lake and saying to myself "i did that"
I was even chuffed enough to put some vid on youtube under my user name "arlottway".
If anyone can tell me the name of the plan or boat of closer year of construction then that would be great.
I was so taken by it that i have done it again and rescued another sorry looking boat from ebay, a 1950 RTTTL.
This is the boat that has led me to this forum as i have come across some pics of a very similar looking boat on this site.
It has given me some ideas on the colour scheme and so on.
Well thanx for looking and i hope i can become a regular member of your family.
Many thanx
David  :-))

Hi David, and welcome to Mayhem.

I'm sure you'll find plenty of info here, there are some very knowledgeable people on this forum, and someone should be able to help you with your inquiries.

Peter.

OK just about worked out that the vosper is a little larger than 1:40 around 1:32 scale if that helps?
Posted a message to model slipways to see if they can help.
Also the river cruiser is around 1:16 scale and i need a dinghy and some figures to go in it. i have found many but they are all fishing or gunship crew and i would like some figures who look like they are enjoying a day out on the river any help greatfully recieved.

Thanx
David

Peter thanx for the reply, sorry posted this as you were leaving your reply, i really am getting into this boating stuff and really want to do these boats justice.

Hi DickyD, yep that was the maiden voyage on Askern lake in Doncaster.
I was impressed with the scale speed and i could get 20 mins out of a 1500Mah Lipo battery.
the other vid is with the onboard camera.

Hi Rem, yeah may have bitten off more than i can chew with this one. {-)
No idea what the motor is! a little six volter covered in damp i think. works though as i tested it with one of my 6V flight batteries. rest of hull is empty bar battery tray and servo tray, oh yeah and two big piles of some brown coloured sealent around rudder and prop shaft.
I hope you dont mind but i am going to base the refit on your vosper as i think it looks great.
Just hope i can do it justice.

:embarrassed:, Thanks, that was my first attempt at model boat Building, but it was a fairly straight forward kit. is there a servo fitted in your boat. I image you have some rc gear from your flying day, do you have a 2.4 set? Alot are using them now for boats. Let me know how you get on, got to let the dogs out.
Keep your props wet.

Hi Robert, sorry haven't replied sooner but been a little busy.
The river cruiser i have restored is running on 2.4Ghz using an AR500 Rx and my trusty DX7 Tx.
It has a graupner 720BB direct drive motor and 30amp brushed ESC with lipo jumper and i run 1500Mah 11.1v lipo's which give me an easy 20 minute run.
This vosper will have a similar set up as it really needs gutting completely and starting from scratch.
I am thinking about replacing the decking all together as it is covered in this stuff that feels like course grade sandpaper and despite all my efforts with the hobby drill wont sand down?
I can replace the mast and radar using bbq skewers and tooth picks but am coming up short on the missing parts of the rear of the deck and a suitable sized life boat.
Contacted cornwall model boats and slipway and neither can help.
I have heard of a model boat club in my area and am going to try and get down to see if i can get any help from there.
I am at the Harrogate christmas show next weekend perhaps there will be some ideas there, although it is predominently flying so am more likely to come back with a plane or two  :-))
Will let you know how i get on.

Best regards

Have you tried Mac's mouldings yet? He might just have what you require.

Hi Guys, thanx for the tips  :-))
Found a site called reade models which has nearly everything i need bar the boat on the back, Richard, looked at the website you offered and they are a little out of my price range at the moment but thanx plenty of detail there.
working on the restoration a little at a time as the missus has me painting the house as well at the moment and laying some new floors.
Cut a new deck as the old one just would not sand down smooth so it seemed easier to cut one from 1/16th ply. the radar antenna is built and i have been able to restore that elongated round thingy that sticks a little way up from the cabin (sorry, dont know what its called %) )
The main cabin is painted but the windows were to bad to save so the are gone and i have painted black replacements over them with frames.
have been struggling for people to put on my river cruser as all i seem to get is sailors, fishermen or rescue figures, until the same chap at the harrogate show suggested i look in the childrens toy section in toys r us where they display the dolls house stuff, and bingo will be purchasing some real soon.

Stay afloat.

Well, not been online for sometime, busy with work ETC. the Vosper is painted up and accessories purchased and glued into place. Quite proud of it really, considering what it looked like before it looks pretty good to me. might not withstand some of the close scrutiny down at the local model boat club but as soon as i have sorted out a power set up for it to scale then it will be off to the lake, well when it has thawed that is  {:-{
Merry christmas one and all.

Well hasn't this been a long time?  %%
Gonna post some pics of the restored boat at some point but just wanted to update.
Had some trouble with the power set up here. Put a brushed ESC to use the lipos with the old motor and it belted across the lake at a stupid speed. Got it back and the motor was smoking like mad and very hot, some of the plastic backing plate was burned brown. So that one gone. A friend then gave me a new MFA 15v motor and that pushed it along real nice. Bit of lead in the back to balance it out and got a nice bow wave. got it back and the hull was full of water  {:-{. well not full but you know what i mean. I had done all the testing in the bath, loads of vasaline on the prop shaft and rudder shaft, no holes that i could see in the hull? baffled. Changed battery and ventured out again. noticed that as the water sometimes splashed up onto the decking it was running straight into the hull. Have just sorted that by sealing the deck with just enough room to change the battery. simples. Not tested this latest upgrade yet but hoping its ok will let you know.
hope you all had a great xmas and santa bought you all you wanted.
