Martin Davis for the new model boats editor
« on: November 27, 2006, 09:43:54 pm »

Chaps,

As you have seen in the latest MB, John Cundell is retiring. On a different thread it was mentioned Martin takes over at the helm of MB. Just look at how he has brought us this forum weeks after the plug was pulled on the old one so what could he do in the magizine world.

Do we assume this to be a genuine possibility? I know nothing of Martin - other than the splendid work he puts in here - so I am unable to say how seriously he would treat this.

However, I think that there were considerable conflicts of interest on the old Model boats website due to JC's position as "Official Spokesman" for the publishers and moderator of the site so, on balance, I think this is a bad idea. Mayhem (and Martin) should remain independent of the major commercial players in the model boat world.

But Martin isn't independant - Just look at all the advertising at the top of the forum! How anyone claim that Mayhem is independant is beyond me!

Now don't get me wrong, I know these sites can take a fairly large chunk of cash to run (I know, I run one!), and I'm certainly not slagging Martin off for getting funds from whatever sources he can, but because of that funding he certainly isn't independant.

I disagree there Eddy. What evidence do you have that this Forum or the Mayhem site is influenced by commercial interests. I certainly haven't seen any. Accepting a few adverts doesn't mean that you are in the pocket of the advertisers.

John Cundell's situation was different. He was duty bound as an employee to support the position of his employers and everyone understood that and the potential problems it could cause. I happen to think he did a good job. Martin isn't beholden to anyone. The site can be run without the advertising, it just helps pay the bills as is the case with many other similar sites. I am trying to set up a trader directory on the site - would you suggest that I'm in the pay of the Traders?

As far as the Model Boats editorship is concerned, read the job profile. It's up to individuals to decide if they meet the requirements, not for the membership of the Forum to start a popular movement!

Rant over!
