Dont know about fire boats, but not all doors on launches are intended to walk through upright.  Quite often going into a cabin involves going through the hole in the wall and stepping down to the interior deck level.

A five foot six crew member would be 5 1/2"  tall  4" would be to small, watch out for some makes of figures as they all seem to be 20 stone and when you put them next to a scale hatch they would be a cork.

Hope this pic helps for scale, its a misleading boat, this is the 1/16 version with converted German tank crew. A lot of people think the boat is bigger than its actually was, and the figures end up too small. If you are refering to the two small doors giving access to the front compartment behind the wheelhouse, the hatch slides back, and a 6 footer can then go down the steps .

I am sure Tamiya got the scale of the figures correct at 1/16, but they do seem a bit big, so I am in the process of converting to slightly smaller figures. As HS 93 has pointed out, HS mouldings are the only company who had bespoke figures for this boat, at least that was the plan earlier this year, dont know if they ever put them in to production.

The real thing! :-))

Paul's men are the right size as far as body mass , I measured the hatch size from drawrings(original and from pictures persentage of roof size etc) and the openings are near enough correct. I got some 1/16 men from a well known supplier and his head would just about go in the hatch,

I think one problem with a lot of scale figures is that they assume that all military personel are strapping 6ft plus guys.

Many were shorter, in WW2 were probably skinnier, and more recently a lot fatter.
