Hi there if you have a look at the build its in Masterclass - look at the Cervia tug build - the 63ft Whaleback - for diagonal planking and also the Frederique Spashett build for another form of diagonal planking.   Or, have a look at the the Type 42 build in Warships.   That is possibly similar planking to what you want.  They are my efforts  %)

Also in the masterclass, look at the Drifter and Blue Marlin, 2 more attempts at planking with pics.

I'm very nearly at the planking stage with my sailing trawler.

http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=19422.0

The planking will be to scale and intend it to be a filler free job.

I plan to do a photographic record of lining off, spiling, cutting and fitting all the planks to the hull.

As the ship is to a large scale I hope to represent the caulking groove between planks as they are a prominent feature in photographs of these old ships.

I'm hoping it will be a useful and detailed account of the planking process.

Greggy is working to a very high standard  8) :-)) , but there is no need to feel intimidated.  :o

You can also work to a much lower standard. I am on my first scratch build.  ok2

But I know my future efforts will be better. %)

That reminds me, I really must do some work on the boat  :embarrassed:

Thank you for the compliment Tigertiger,  :-)

I hope I don't intimidate would be scratch builders  :(( as this is the exact opposite of what I intended.

My hope is that by showing an honest build including my mistakes, folks will think ''well if he can do it so can I!''

Even the most complicated machinery is constructed of fixings and component parts, I hope to dispel at least some of the mystery of scratch building by breaking it down, making each part and couple it with a representation of each step of the build in a logical manner.

If folks can pick up a pencil and manipulate it the write their name then they have the manual dexterity to manipulate small hand tools to create a good model.

What folks lack is knowledge which with a bit of effort can be found (as provided by the many excellent skills of builders on such as this forum) and the will to play the 'what if' game in experimenting.

If things go wrong as they do with me often! >>:-( the job is analysed and the problem found. The errant part binned and a new part is remade correctly avoiding the previous mistake.

We all have skills in particular areas which we can share with others, I lack skills in representing realistic weathering on a finished model but you can bet I'm following posts that can fill in the gaps! :-))

Scratch building takes a lot of effort but if you have the desire to build an attractive model, the rewards come in building the model and watching it grow, it just takes a great deal of patience.

Of course the satisfaction derived from the admiration of others when looking upon your finished work brings rewards also! :-)) O0 {-)

Here are a few out-takes to giggle at as a point in case which will show I am only human.

Out take 1.   Frame 12. The plywood I originally bought was sold to me as 2 good faced exterior plywood :-), it turned out to be 1 good faced interior nasty stuff that was so full of voids as to be more air than wood! >>:-( >>:-( <*< >>:-(

Out take 2.   Frame 12 again. While making the cardboard half template for frame 12, I shaved off too much of the deck line while cutting it out resulting in a flat area on the deck chamber at the centre line when cutting it out of plywood. Which resulted in making frame 12 for a 3rd time!   :o >>:-( >>:-( <*< {-) {-)

Out take 3.   Frames 14 & 16. Happily grinding away with my multitool and tile cutter bit while cutting the frame bevels, my mind wandered and I ended up grinding too steep a bevel on both frames which didn't come to light until dry assembling them on the keel >>:-( <*<

To err is to be human but to really mess it up takes a Greg! O0 {-) {-) {-) :-))
