Looking for model suggestions
« on: November 22, 2009, 10:29:31 pm »

I have an SVS Snipe plant which needs a new boat.

Some while ago and for fun I installed it into a Lesro TID tug (the little plastic one). It all fitted and ran, but the hull got much too hot so that was the end of that.

Christmas is coming and I am looking for a kit to put the SVS into, so your suggestions would be welcomed.

The criteria is simple: It must be a civilian working boat, (not a Clyde Puffer) and from 24" to 30" long. No open launches, they are not my thing at all.

I have had a look at the list of tug boats elsewhere on this site and really like the Graupner Saturn, but it's no longer available. The Mountfleet River Queen looks nice, also the Midwest Liberty tug (if anyone imports it), but I am open to suggestions.

Fussy aren't we!! :o There are quite a few TID models out there- I think mobile marine models do one thats not too large- if thats what you are lookig for again?

There is also the Pieter Boele and the Joffre, can't remember who makes them, but google them and they'll come up.

I'm afraid the Joffre would present quite a challenge to get a steam plant in it.  Not only is it a relatively small model but the access isn't too great either so geting things in and out could be a frustration.

Maybe some pictures and dimensions of the Snipe plant would help as well as knowing the cylinder bore to give us a very broad idea of what size model it could power.

24 to 30 inches long but an enclosed model is going to be very tight which ever one you go for.

The Mount Fleet River Queen may well be a little bit better in so far as there is slightly better access but you are still not looking at a very big hull.  Why not go a little bit bigger and give yourself a bit more room and accept the power limitations?

Sorry guys, I don't have any pictures yet, I'll take a few later and get them posted.

Actually, looking at the specs, I think I have the Heron, not the Snipe, not that it makes too much difference.

Bunkerbarge, the specs are: 8mm Bore 12mm Stroke. LOA 220mm Width 65mm Height 90mm weight 1.23 Kg. The engine is a twin cylinder oscillator.

Peter, I have a Minivap hull, but I am such a slow builder (too easily distracted) that I thought a kit might help to keep me going. Plus the wife is pestering me for Christmas gift ideas  :-))

If that's the case Neil I take back what I said about the Joffre, it may well be a good choice.  The access hole below the main accomodation block is 240mm x 80mm so your plant will drop in.  You still have the space under the engine casing as well for the RC gear so there are possibilities with this model.

It is made by Caldercraft, which is now a part of JoTiKa.  They advertise in most model boat magazines and you've just missed out on a special offer that was being run in Model Boats Magazine a couple of months ago but you can still get them from:

JoTiKa themselves - http://www.jotika-ltd.com/Pages/1024768/Ccraft_Front.htm

Westbourne models - http://www.westbourne-model.co.uk/caldercraft-radio-control-1771-0.html

The Model Dockyard - http://www.model-dockyard.com/cgi-bin/sh000001.pl?REFPAGE=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2emodel%2ddockyard%2ecom%2f&WD=joffre&PN=Caldercraft_Kits%2ehtml%23aCC1#aCC1

Cornwall Model Boats - http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalog/caldercraft_joffre.html

It also makes into a very attractive model that can be made as either a civilian or a nval version.

Those a very nice pictures.

The Naval version shows the shape and lines of the model really well. It is a better looking model than I thought.
