Saving gas
« on: November 23, 2009, 04:05:38 pm »

Hi,

As mentioned on the earlier gas valve topic, I use the 460g propane/butane cylinders from Halfords at £5-50 each.

With my steam boat out on the ponds this year, I ended up with 13 cylinders with about 50-300g, or so, of gas remaining in them not wishing to voyage with such low reserves and running at  low gas pressure.

Well, I've managed to link cylinders together and drain the gas from the nearly empty ones to create full cylinders.

By placing one cylinder in a bucket of ice and connecting it to an upended cylinder, I managed to create a  pressure difference to completely empty the higher cylinder of the liquid butane/propane. Warming the top cylinder by hand, speeded up the process and I could hear the liquid trickling into the lower cylinder. To keep track of the process, I used a digital kitchen scale (bought previously for montoring the boat's gas consumption) in order not to overfill the lower cylinder.

From the orignal 13 cylinders, I've managed to retrieved 5 full ones worth £27-50.

The shed door and window were opened during this excercise.

Ian.
