Where can I find some Clyde puffer plans?
« on: December 10, 2009, 11:18:19 pm »

One of my multitude of ongoing projects is a 34" Clyde Puffer, part (badly) built, which my Father in Law passed to me (bless him).

The hull is fibreglass and although robust, it is not the best shaped hull I have ever seen! Reading an old article, I suddenly realised I might be able to make the hull look a lot better by adding plating (water colour paper). I have several plans of Puffers, but none show any plating detail. Anyone know where I can download something, as I really don't want to buy another set of plans for this boat.

Before you suggest Googling, type in 'clyde puffer plans' and see how much cra....unsuitable material comes up.

Try this site, not sure if it is what you are looking for but I hope it helps.

You are welcome, but you may not want to know what I searched it under. ;)

Put like that, I think I'd rather not know  :embarrassed:

I've found dozens of sites and managed to get a few good pictures, but all the plans either have no plating detail, or are of Lochinvar which I already have the plans for.

Send a PM to Ron1. His son, Anthony, made that puffer - he may be able to give you more information.

Thanks for that Mike, but I'm sorted now.

Plates all made and ready for the PVA  :-))

I'm impressed! I've been working on mine (a kit!) for about two years and only got the motor and bulkheads fitted in the hull - the rest is still in the mock-up stage!

As I said in my first post, this model was thrust upon me. The hull is about 32 inches long and not a good shape, although well laid up and strong. At present I am repairing faults in the moulding, like a 6 inch section of keel that was mainly air bubble.

I got the idea of using plating to make the hull more realistic from a 2003 article in Marine Modelling and I'm using water colour paper as plates. It helps that my daughter is an artist and had a load of sample pieces laying around  :-))

There is a VERY long way to go on the model, now that I have stripped off most of the decking. Mind, that wasn't hard as most of it was held on with tiny amounts of PVA and a lot of good luck.

I plan to install a Cheddar Pintail V twin engine, but I have yet to source the boiler. If Tim at Cheddar Valley Steam has the time, I'll get one from him, if not  then Macsteam.

Thus far the pictures would only show a trail of destruction...ummm I mean disassembly. Now we are starting reconstruction, I'll get me camera out. I also need to photo the 'big tug with no name' as the conversion from Electric to steam is near completion.
