Glynn Guest plan....?
« on: January 01, 2010, 04:34:49 pm »

Any of you guys remember a plan(I believe it was a freebie in a magazine years ago) by GG of a Sealink ferry? Does anyone know what year it was?

Hi,

My 1982/83 plans handbook lists a Dave Metcalf plan of the St Columba to two scales, 1:100 and 1:150 (51in and 34in). The plans are listed on the MyHobbyStore website, MM1269 and MM1270, £14.95 each. A search under St Columba will find both.
Hope this helps.

That'll be this one, then? Been there, sailed that one, but now it's far too big for me to handle in here.

The one I'm on about, I'm sure was a Glynn Guest design, about half the size of the St Columba and the usual GG design.

Thanks anyways Jindivik, much appreciate your time and trouble.

I have an "official" list of the free plans going back to 1975 and there is no ferry design by Glynn included on it.

Naff! OK, thanks Colin...perhaps it was MMI magazine then? Or maybe I should just pm GG himself?

Or maybe it wasn't GG after all...HH perhaps?

Hello U33 and everyone

The plan you are referring to was published in the Model Boats scale special - on one side of the plan there is HMS Amazon by David Metcalf and on the other one there is the plan for The Lady Helen - a 31" car ferry - based on the SeaLink Vessel - be that the one you are referring too?

Hi ya there Rich

The plan I have with my book is in a bit of a 'sad' state - if all else is lost, I will pass it to my friend who has use of a copier which does A3 size and I will piece the plan together for you.   But, I have seen it a few times on Ebay along with the plans and also, now that Colin knows what we are looking for - he may be able to locate the original plan drawings for you - along with the Magazine.   I cant see a date on the article, but I am keep looking.

Let me know if you want me to get copies for you.  No worries.

Probably explains why it wasn't on the list if it was a Special. I've got it somewhere but I think it goes back quite a way! Rich is happy now anyway!

Hi there Rich

Sadly, I built the model on the other side - HMS AMAZON - but, looking at what I have of the plans for LADY HELEN - it does look a nice build.  Pretty straightforward, balsa wood and cardboard - it actually incorporates a bow thruster in it.

aye, looks a nice build.

May I ask a question, what has drawn you towards building from a Glynn Guest plan?   I have one or two plans of Glynn's and they are on my ready-to-build shelf - the majority of his plans are very well thought out I think.

Colin, I have been looking from cover-to-cover to try and find a date for the magazine - I know its pre-1991-cos I can remember my dad asking me what the chicken houses (air intakes) were for, at either side of the funnel (on HMS AMAZON) and my dear dad died in 1991.    I can find an advertisement inside the magazine for the Model Boats magazine and its got April 1978 - the one with the Sirius Paddle Steamer on the front.

 :-))

A good question John...I'm fed up with subs, and whilst rooting about in my desk drawer for something I found the pic of St Columba. That took me back a good few years, I used to sail it by proxy for our club chairman, he liked to sail his HMS Queen Elizabeth and I always enjoyed sailing the ferry for him at regattas and shows.

I can't build a big boat like that whilst I'm here, I have neither the room nor the tools required to do so, then I remembered the GG ferry...and you all know the rest of the story.

I built several of GG's boats in the past, always found them to be an easy build and they always worked first time. So, young sir...that's why I fancy building the good ship Lady Helen (which will be renamed Princess Catherine after the good woman)

Can't lay my hands on my copy although I know I've seen it recently. You know the way they hide when you are looking for them.....

Another question...Lady Helen is built to GG's favourite scale of 1/144th, so what would that be in model railway terminology? I know 1/72nd scale is roughly OO scale, so would 1/144th be OOO? Just thinking of ferry passengers...can't have a ferry without passengers. Or seats for said passengers to sit on.

Rich

Cancel that..a swift google tells me that N gauge is 1/148 scale which is near enough, I guess.

Going by the antiquity of the magazine, I'd guess the Amazon would be the early one...?

So do I.... <*<  <*<

But there again, for £2.50 it's not gonna break the bank. So I bought it anyway!!! I can always sell it on if it's duplicated.

Thanks John

I built HMS Sheffield from GG plans an few years ago, but  twice the size, and I use it as a straight runner, and very good it is too (both for going straight and its apperance on the water)   :-))
