Turned brass handrail knobs (or pillars)
« on: December 08, 2006, 04:17:33 pm »

Anybody know where I might obtain a small quantity of turned brass handrail knobs to take 1/16" brass rod and put handrails on th roof af a steam launch?
Ideally to put handrail 1/4" above the surface of the roof.  Many thanks.  Seefalke

Depending on how much work you want to do and what scale you are working at, one option is the 'male' half of ball-and-socket steering joints on r/c cars. If you can drill straight through the ball you would have a mount with just about the stand-off you need. I've used this a couple of times and at 1/12 or above it's fine.

Ingenious!

I shall give it a look-see, as on one model these hand grab-rails are to be painted.

On another models they need to be polished brass.

Thanks for the tip.

I've used both brass and chrome varieties. I think the chrome ones were either Kyosho or Schumacher while the brass ones were Tamiya but, of course, it could be the other way round!!

Hi re the handrail supports.  Try the model railway scratch building parts for locos carriages etc..  There are several scales and you should find a suitable size.

To roycv and others

Yep!

I found exactly what I wanted by going to Maidstone Engineering, who supply handrail knobs for the railway people in 3.5", 5" and 7" guage, in brass and nickel plated brass.
Thanks, and a Merry Christmas to all.
