Build log- Margoletta
« on: January 24, 2010, 06:58:30 pm »

Hello all,

Today I started tracing out the components for the Ray Wood freelance cabin cruiser 'Margoletta' (Model Boats June 2005). Thanks to Dougal99 for sending me the build notes.

The plans show 400 size electric power but as I'm getting more into model engineering the jury is still out on what I'll use for power.
Pics promised as soon as there is something to photograph.

Regards,
Rockets.

Has anyone else on here built this boat? I would be glad to hear of your build, perhaps see how it turned out.

Hi Rockets.

I looks like you are tracing out you components on Balsa wood. Ignore me if I am wrong.

If you are, this will probably lead to grief. It did when I started doing stuff. Balsa is just too weak. I would recomend doing frames etc. in thin plywood, and then doing the planking/hull sides in balsa.

Hi there

According to the build article one is to build this model from Balsa-wood used as the frames, %) with hardwood strengthening the corners of the frames.  If anything, I would substitute the Balsa-wood for lite ply - however, there is nothing that beats building from a plan and sticking to what is recommended for the materials - especially when it turns out right.

Keep up with the good build  Rockets and keep on posting photographs - we like to see the pics.   :-)) :-))

Hello fellers,

Thanks for the words of advice. The plan does state balsa frames with ply doublers. Would you reccommend that I bin this and just use ply? I have a small amount of ply for the doublers and a sheet for the keel.

If I go down the ply route would it be best to stick with built up frames or just make them one piece?

Your advice is most appreciated.

Cheers,
Rockets.

Just checked in one of my Vic Smeed books and he mentions the use of balsa built up frames. As the designer of Margoletta nods in the direction of Vic Smeed for his inspiration I guess that is why he specifies this.

I'm going to press ahead with the designed method and see what happens. I always dope balsa really well anyway.

As far as I'm concerned the word of Vic Smeed on any model boat or aircraft matter is Gospel!

hi ya there Rockets

I have had a read of the article in the Model Boats mag last night and if you see how the frames have been built up by the author, you will notice that there is no cross-grain in it.   This way, it makes the frames extremely strong.   If it was me, I personally would stick to the author's build religiously.  This is because he has built his model that way and IT WORKS.  There is the proof.

If one deviates from the plans, all unforeseen problems may surface.  This could turn an enjoyable build into a nightmare!

The time to start amending construction methods and materials, is when one has a good bit of experience of building from plans and kits.

The thing to remember is, balsa wood models have been around from the year DOT...... look at some of Glynn Guest's models and some of Vic Smeed's - a lot of them still come up on the web, which have been around for 30+ years, a bit longer than TT - if he had problems with balsa wood, it must have been the methods he was using.

Hey Bluebird,

I am sticking close to the original build, no cross grain in the frames and as I say I will be doping them well. I have long ben a fan of Vic Smeed, and haven't had any issues with balsa in model aircraft.

Perhaps TT had problems with a larger model or a more complex hull. I think that this hull with the laminated chine rails should be pretty rigid. The plywood skins should help too.

Thanks for the input fellers,

It's been a long time, having been away with my work. I have almost got the frames finished and the keel cut out. When they are mated together I'll post a pic.

Rockets, I built one back in 2006. I had the plan enlarged to give a hull length of about 78cm, and closed in the rear deck to stop water splashing in. It's built from 1.5mm ply and is named after our granddaughter. 2 photos below.

That looks fantastic scaled up. Hmm, maybe the next project... Then again do I really need two Margolettas?

Can I ask what power plant you have in her?

One 545 type motor running off two 6v 4ah batteries wired in parallel to give 8ah. I was only going to use one but realised that I need some stern ballast, the weight of which was exactly the same as another battery, so 2 batteries gives me much more running time - nearly 3 hours.

I found this postcard of a broads cruiser online, very inspirational for my Margoletta build. This is the kind of craft that I really admire.

Done a little bit more....

The keel is made from some very nice mahogany ply that I got free. I have made the transom from the same material, should look nice varnished up. It is wise to stay well in with the station carpenters!

I will be doing a bit more this coming week hopefully. Thanks to Peter Fitness for the top help he has given me.

Thanks fellers.

Circlip, I am planning to put the bird motif on the bow. I've also been looking at some archive photos of broads cruisers from the 30's through to the 50's and I'd like to mess around with the superstructure a bit to make it a bit more typical.

Cheers,

Been doing a bit more research on Broads cruisers and I think I've found the actual boat that Ray Wood based this design on. It's a Mayfair class boat and is seen here depicted in an advertising postcard.

Hey Hemayann,

I'm having a go at doing it right, but I might make some subtle changes to the superstructure to make her a bit more period. I saw your other thread, hope you get your boat back.
