hi ya there Rockets
I have had a read of the article in the Model Boats mag last night and if you see how the frames have been built up by the author, you will notice that there is no cross-grain in it. This way, it makes the frames extremely strong. If it was me, I personally would stick to the author's build religiously. This is because he has built his model that way and IT WORKS. There is the proof.
If one deviates from the plans, all unforeseen problems may surface. This could turn an enjoyable build into a nightmare!
The time to start amending construction methods and materials, is when one has a good bit of experience of building from plans and kits.
The thing to remember is, balsa wood models have been around from the year DOT...... look at some of Glynn Guest's models and some of Vic Smeed's - a lot of them still come up on the web, which have been around for 30+ years, a bit longer than TT - if he had problems with balsa wood, it must have been the methods he was using.
