2.4ghz is good for everyone
« on: February 05, 2010, 11:00:48 am »

Like the title says , 2.4ghz is good for everyone . I have noticed a large number of the members at Goole have taken the plunge (especially as most of them are retired, old) and bought these radio sets .
Whilst this is good for them as they can switch on and go , this means that there is no waiting at the peg board for your chosen freq to become available .
So the new technolegy is a good thing, what is the situation like at your pond ? .

2.4ghz is the best thing since sliced bread. I've been using it for a couple years in my aeroplanes, I use it in my boat, my son can't use in his sub though  :(( They tell me it's a too higher frequency to pass through water. Quite a few folks in my club use it.

2.4Ghz seems to solve everybody's problems. Except submariners.

However, there are still a few rumours around about 2.4Ghz issues. Spectrum have released a special marine version and implied that the air one was unsatisfactory for boats, but have not actually said why (AFAIK). This might be a marketing trick?

Some fliers have suggested that 2.4Ghz can suffer from occasional glitches as the propagation characteristics of 2.4Ghz can include aerial shadowing. Some 2.4Ghz systems have two aerials to minimise such problems, and Giant Cod has a multiplexer circuit project to allow two receivers to be dualed for the same reason.

I have not come across any definitive proof of these issues - but I have found that the very cheap 2.4Ghz sets can suffer from poor soldering and other quality defects. Their basic design seems good, but anything sold for these rock-bottom prices is likely to have some quality issues, even if it is just with the trim and the instruction booklet...

Spectrum have released a special marine version last year and before then there was even a note on there web site  saying not suitable for marine use, and as far as glitches, that has been blamed on poor driving/ flying / steering  :(( :embarrassed: since radio gear came out.

According to Spectrum the 3 Chanel marine receiver is "water resistant"

Some of my 6 and 7 channel Spectrum's use a small satellite receiver to optimise the aerial postions. Depending on the cables used you can put the receivers several feet apart. The 9 and 12 channel receivers can use up to 4 or 5 satellite receivers. One of the problems with 2.4ghz is the aerials are so short than can be masked by solid objects like engines, battery packs etc. The extra receivers are to ensure that this never happens.
