speed control
« on: February 10, 2010, 12:11:18 am »

Hi I am also fitting a working prop to the schooneer as an after thought, it was going to be sail only , but after watching a guy rescue his yacht from a weeping willow in the middle of a lake by wading waist deep in freezing water I thought I might need power at some stage.
I have been told using a servo to change the wiring direction so that you can get forwards or reverse on the motor is not correct, and that I should be using a speed control, can it change motor direction?
and what would the curcuit diagram look like, and what parts  would I need to buy including the motor to drive my 52"schooner.
I might be able to build the schooner but electrics are beyond me
grateful for any help I can get

First thing you need to do is have a look at some speed controllers, here is a good start.  http://www.action-electronics.co.uk/home.html

Next thing you need to do is find people like FLJ, the man is a mine of information and has helped not just me but many others here with niggly little electrical issues.

I can definitely undrstand the reluctance to wade waist deep in icy water, brings back nasty memories of river crossing training in glacial rivers back in the enlisted days.

Hi All you need is a servo & two micro switches, thats assuming its a permanent mag motor.

This is more what you require:
http://www.action-electronics.co.uk/pdfs/Slipway%20Loyal.pdf
A Mabuchi 555 motor should suit this model nicely, running on a 12 volt battery and perhaps a 35mm 3- or 4-blade prop. You would actually only need the P79 speed controller (it's cheaper, but it's connected up exactly the same way).
Don't worry about BEC - "there be dragons...................."  ;)
