Official start to the Salmon season.
« on: February 11, 2010, 06:25:35 pm »

Who managed to get a couple of hours fishing today? Are there many game fishermen on this site?

I managed two hours, seen a couple of lovely fresh fish moving, unfortunately I only managed to catch a kelt around the 12lb mark. <:(. Safely returned to spawn another day. :-)

i hope you have a better season than we downunder are having.  what is classed as a good sized salmon up your way. ours would be 15 - 20lbs. of course a few years ago 30lbs was the norm. do you catch them on a fly or spinners. spinners would be our top method. mind you our salmon rivers tend to be glacier fed and quite braided and fast flowing.sorry if it sounds like '20 questions' but its always interesting to know how others fish.

An average summer fish (grilse) would be about 6lb-8lb, spring and Autumn fish are around 10lb-14lb (I've witnessed many in this size range). These are conservative figures because I have heard of a lot of fish up to 25lb but never seen them with my own eyes. :o

I prodominantly fish with the fly, my preferred way. Died shrimp have been banned on the water for a fair few years now (to many fish being caught on it). At least with the fly you can fish artificial shrimp patterns. I don't care if I catch a fish or two, just like standing in a river with a nice rod in hand taking in the sights and sounds. O0
If the water is running too high to get into I bring the spinners out (Devon minnows and black and copper flying C's) fishing them as if they were a fly. The worm is a very popular meathod also.

hook of choice  is called a zed spinner or spoon as shown:   http://www.fishingmag.co.nz/salmon-methods-zed-spinners.htm    one or two salmon a season is about all you can expect to catch nowdays. mind you some people almost live on the river and obviously catch a lot more.

Can't beat the traditional lures, unfortunately they don't count for as many fish here now. I think with all the new materials and lures that have come out most tend to try them there fore accounting for more fish. Most lures now a days is designed to catch the anglers eye and not fish.

Flying C http://www.fishingmegastore.com/fisheagle-flying-c-mixed-pack~1036.html I only fish copper blades black bodies. Unfortunately they are hard to find in shops made in these colours, so I make my own.

please explain how you make them. they look like similar colours to lures used here. might be worth me making a couple and trying just as something different to what they are used to seeing flashed in front of them.

I bought one of these kits http://www.fishingmegastore.com/fishing-pool-flying-c-lure-kit-10-kit-with-former~1521.html the one with the former included then buy the black tubbing and copper blades separate. It come with full intructions, just not the colours I like to use. You do get some mixed colours of tubbig and a couple of different colour and size blades. This shop stocks everything seperate. The former, spare tube, blades, wire, spinner blades, beads. works out more expensive. Buy the kit and buy some tube and blades in desired colours.

I hope all goes weel with the op. O0 I call it salmon fishing, more like spey casting with a couple of tuggs at the line a season. {-) It's the day away from everything that really does it for me. No kid, mrs, hustle and bustle of life.

If my mother and father let me leave home when I wanted too I could/should have been a gillie. What a perfect job for me. O0
