Rechargeable batteries
« on: February 12, 2010, 05:50:41 pm »

Not for boats however.
I have four rechargeable cordless telephones in our house, one in the kitchen, one in our sitting room, and on the top floor, one in the bedroom and one by my computer, very useful, no having to run up and down two flights of stairs.
However the kitchen one after about a minute gives two bleeps, then a few seconds later cuts off, they all are sitting on charging units, does this mean - 1 the charging unit has failed, or 2 the re- chargeable batteries need replacing ?  (or both )

Try swapping the batteries with a working phone  O0 If it is the battery look for a replacement in the Maplins catalog. :-))

If the batteries are any age at all, they are probably duds. It's the constant charging which kills them and to save taking the batteries out to swap them around, simply swap the phones around on the bases since not all the charging bases could be deemed faulty.
What you describe is a classic battery problem.
I have fitted 2300mh Ni mH AA cels in my phones and can leave them off the base stations all day without any noticable signs of discharging. Some might argue that the chargers are designed for ni-cads but since they only trickle charge, they are way below the critical charge rate for the NimH cells and work quite happily.

I'm rather taken with this place - they post rapidly and cheaply, and I have had good service so far...

Hi Colin

Try swapping the one in the kitchen with one of the others - if the one in the kitchen then charges up and works and the other one runs down then it is the charging base. If it does not then it is the battery on the kitchen unit.

Substitution faulting - finest kind.  Hopefully just the one problem, but if it turns out to need a new battery, and you go for a higher capacity, remember that while they last a lot longer, they also take longer to charge up.
