gas soldering iron
« on: March 11, 2010, 06:27:31 pm »

Hello,

I was thinking of buying a gas soldering iron, or maybe it should be a blow torch. What i need to do is soldering of a rudder etc .

I was thinking that a gas soldering iron would also offer the ability the use as a blow torch, would i be right in thinking this? If so can anybody recomend a good one, if recommending makes is allowed?

Thanks for any help   :D

I'd get the cheapest gas blowtorch sold for soldering plumbing fittings - check out B&Q though they may not be the cheapest. I bought one for my lad that had a piezzo lighter - very useful. Try to find a make that has been around for a while, or which several makes of cartridge will fit, so there shouldn't be a problem finding replacement cartridges. Remember you can always turn a powerful blowlamp down - you can't turn one that's too weak UP. Keep an eye out for discarded gas fires - the firebrick slabs make useful soldering hearths.  I used to have a "gas soldering iron", but it was pretty feeble. However it was ok for fine work, like railings but not really enough for a rudder.

Gas irons come in a wide range of sizes, and each has its own range of attachments variously allowing anything from a needle tip to a moderate sized chisel, some have a hot air attachment (VERY hot) and many can be used without a tip as a small blowtorch.  The largest one I had was about equivalent to 250W of electric, and could tackle any of my modelling jobs.  The only thing to watch out for was the exhaust from the side of the tip.
Rudders?  Depends on the size.  Mine were small-ish and relatively unstressed, larger ones I tended to build by other means, but is soldering large ones, tobyker has it right.

I have just ordered one from Amazon. about £7.50.

There are two for sale.

I like amazon, they don't just do books. I buy a lot of stuff on there and there is no need for FleaPay.

I have to say that I am a fan and a very happy customer.

one thing to remember when using these is that the exhaust is usually at the side of the tip so if you solder batteries watch any heat shrink or sensitive parts close to the area soldered, they are great for brass parts..
