gas tank connection
« on: March 23, 2010, 07:23:15 pm »

Does anyone know where I can get a knurled nut to connect up my gas tank?

I have a gas tap with 1/4 x 40 tpi thread & the cheddar nut I have is a 1/4 x 32 tpi. I have looked on the web sites i know of & not found any knurled nuts. Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Cheers Glenn

Thanks Peter, the tank is homemade as is the gas valve, I have actually talked to Mike Abbott at Mc steam & he will make me one. I was just wondering if there was a commercially available one, as all the gas taps seem to be 40 tpi & all the nuts seem to be 32 tpi.

To be honest its not an insurmountable problem as I have fitted an automatic gas valve with a 32 tpi thread, to which the nut I have can be fitted. However it would mean having a 4 inch piece of pipe attached to the gas tank during refills & a few burnt fingers when reattaching the gas pipe, due to the automatic gas valve being quite well buried in the bowels of the boat.

Welcome to the world that is steam engineering- model engineering threads @ .25 inches is 32tpi- full size engineering threads for gas at .25inch are 40tpi!!!!!

You should try working on SY Gondola- over the past month i've had- BSP, BSF, UNC, AF, Metric and Whitworth threads- all on the one boiler!!!!

As we used to say, about 20 years ago, on the last British built vessel I sailed on:

"Every inch of this ship's Metric"!!

Those threads are model engineer threads try http://www.pollymodelengineering.co.uk/ they have all sorts of fittings available. Maybe not knurled but certainly 1/4 x 40 nuts

Alternative is https://www.maccmodels.co.uk/
