Feeling Really Tight Fisted
« on: January 01, 2007, 03:04:08 pm »

Well it looks like 2007 is going to be the year of the skinflint. With no real great amount of cash to through about being on a very tight budget, now I can't work.  Take a tip from me don't take ill before your coming up to retirement they don't want to know you. Over the past few days I have sat at the table and saved around 30 hard saved cash. Making some fittings for the boat I am building for my Grandson and I. So far it has cost me about £ 20 on some bits of Balsa and filler. Salvaged all the motor, servo etc from an old rubbishy boat car thing he had bought him last year that sat on his yard for over half the year. It still worked surprise surprise. Odd bits of plywood ex model railway and some half inch ply from my friendly timber yard. Given free. Thatnks mate. So what have I made so far. Hand rails some old Aliminiumn welding rods. Used to be a welder in a past life. Ladders from off of Noddies Mr Sparks Lorry. But the best bit yet is two life belts from three bits of balsa stuck together and sanded to shape they look reel good all though I say myself.
Now making an Anchor and some other bits. Why bye them when you can sit down and make them yourself. Oh by the way if you need any chain then have a look at this site that I use for my Model Railway site they sell it by the yard length and it is just right for Anchor chain.

A footnote to the item above. I also managed to remember something my Grandma taught me in my long lost, mis-spent childhood. She showed me how to knit.
Nothing fancy but I did knit a scalf, not a thing a boy wants to remember though. So how has knitting helped me.
I saw a site offering Bow and Stern Bumpers. The price was really stupid £ 32 for a 200mm Front one and £15 something for one rear one so a grand total of £60 odd pounds.
I got out a ball of string and asked my Wife and then my Mum to have a go at knitting me some.
After a week or so with no uptakes on the offer I sat down and knit them myself, It was slow going but I got there in the end and I must say that they look quite the part. When the boat if finnished I shall put some more pictures of it on the site. With some pictures of my works of art the bumpers.
So if you want to try and make some it is dead simple just knit a piece 200mm long by 30mm and then roll it up and stich it together the same for the bak ones but 100mm by 30mm.
If you can't knit then get the wife to do it for you.
They looks quite good on the boat, and you saves yourself about £59. Can't be bad that can it.

I get her in the kitchen to make mine for me but she doesn't knit them she crochets them ( I did use the spell check but doesn't seem to know the word )

Here is the boat as it stands now just a few bits to fit and then its time to varnish it. I am quite pleased with it for my very first go at a boat. Kit or other wise so being a devil for punishment I scratch built it. Keeps my hands working and makes sure the wheelchair don't seize up.
Pictured are my attempt at a lifebelt and my knitting skills come out to the front. Ha ha
