rudder not working at full throttle
« on: May 19, 2010, 06:58:37 am »

I don't know what the problem could be, but when at full throttle the rudder does not work.  Whit the boat on the stand and giving full throttle and trying to turn the rudder there is no movement, yet when i slow down the throttle the rudder functions very well.  I know that the members may have some ideas.  Could my problem be not enough battery, as I'm only using 4 aa batteries? Any suggestions?
Thanks

Have you fitted suppressor capacitors to the motor(s)?

Linkages sticking/jamming?
Throttle servo could be going over it's normal travel at full throttle and taking too much power from the battery pack?
Vibration problem?
Loose connection on rudder servo into rx?

fabio......a few questions need answers

1. are you using the same RX [receiver] batteries on board your vessel as your prime electrical supply for your vessel electric motor?
2. what type [& model] motor do you have installed?
3. if the answer to 1. is No, .......please confirm what voltage & Ma capacity batteries are you using to supply the motor?

Temporarily unplug the ESC from the receiver and try it with another servo fisrt -- see if the same thing is still happening.

Let us know a bit more about the boat and the est of the installation, we should find a fairly sensible answer.
Assuming that the 4 AA cells are supplying power for everything, (it IS an electric motor, not an internal combustion device?), there might not be enough to power everything at once, and in cases like that the device doing the most work is the one to stop working first.
Is it one of those radios that can do fancy mixing?  You may have found an unexpected program option.

Its only happening at full throttle PMK so dissing the ESC will take the problem away (no current drain by motor)

If you have a meter, connect it across the battery
1 Measure the voltage with motor not running
2 Measure the voltage with motor half throttle
3 Measure the voltage with motor at full throttle
4 repeat 2&3 with rudder servo operating
If there is a marked drop in voltage with motor at
full throttle you will probably need a separate receiver
battery  but you will then have to disable the BEC
on the ESC

Turns out that my power plant (4 aa batteries) were not sufficient to operate the motor at full throttle and operate the rudder servo at the same time.
thanks again for your input.
