designing your own ship...
« on: June 30, 2010, 03:47:55 pm »

So, im new to modelling, just got my 1st model and am waiting for the radio gear to drop through my letter box.

But talking to my gf last night (id forgotten this) but her dad works in a plastics factory, used to make bodywork for tvr's and the like. so i jokingly suggested he make me a hull for a battleship.

But the thing is, ive got a very clear image in my head of what i want, but its kinda hard to describe and im rubbish at drawing, so i was just wondering, how hard is it to design your own hull? I'd then adapt the superstructure from other ships to make up my own unique ship.

I've been looking at pictures on google and none of them have the shape im after.

Anyone think its worth me bothering, or know of a site with good pics of hulls?

thanks

The design part is easy... then it gets more difficult...

Delftship is a good program that you can use, just down load it. After some practice it becomes easier to use.
The link below is a sight where you can download a program that will allow you to be able to design your own ship and you can also download other ship and tug hulls that you can use and change if so desire to.

Ask your local builders merchant for blue or pink insulation foam

UK suppliers of all sorts of foam sheets are Sheffield Insulations, they have depots all over UK. Check Yellow Pages for your nearest.  Not cheap so check building sites for off-cuts and scraps.

You can use CAD programs for Mac, or even Adobe Illustrator, to draft your own hull.  It helps if you have top and side views, and photos of the hull out of water

Designing a ship is much more than just aesthetics. If is possible to build an unsailable hull.
I did this as a kid.

If I were 'freelancing', I would tend to go for an existing hull design that is close to my idea of what I want, bearing in mind part of it will not be vissible on the water. That Way I know the hydrodynamics are ok. I would then go mental with the superstructure.
Just my 2 cents.

do you have any examples of programs? dont really know where to look.

ive found a little plastic model that has the right hull shape that i want, but i want it to be 2-3 times bigger, maybe even bigger, so is it easier to upscale a current model or just to start again?

...........not with the superstructure on back to front and a Soviet helicopter on the stern.

Some of the cheap RTS models have been converted into quite respectable models, but by the end of the conversion, they are no longer exactly cheap.
