Best prices?
« on: July 12, 2010, 05:06:04 am »

Hi,
I don't know if this is the right place to post this, let me know if it would be better elsewhere.

I've been looking for a while and have decided on the Billings Smit Nederland.  Now I'm looking to buy one and have been trying to find the best price I can.  I live in Canada but very close to the US border so can ship to the US if it's cheaper.

I have talked to people who have paid $400 and would like to find one for that price (or better of course)

Thanks for any help.

From experience.

If you are shipping across a border you need to think about shipping cost, customs duty AND there is an import/customs handling fee (where you have to pay for the service of paying the customs duty).
All these costs should be considered when pricing up.

You can get hit with customs duty, even if the item is duty paid in the original market.
And so you should ask the seller about not paying purchase taxes or VAT.

If you are going to hop across the US border, include the gas money in your calculations. Unless you can combine it with another purpose, like a trip to see uncle Buck.

I always consider the additional costs involved.  I regularly cross the border so some of the costs will be covered anyhow.

Of course I'd prefer to buy locally but the prices don't compare, even with the additional costs involved.
