Ripley - Model Boats free plan mistake
« on: July 18, 2010, 11:16:46 am »

It has just been pointed out that the free plan in the June 2010 issue of Model Boats, the USS Ripley, contains an error.  The hull side as drawn is one inch (25 mm)too short.
The solution is to extend the hull side pieces at the bows forward by one inch.
This is I freely admit my mistake as it is on my original drawings.  If anyone has encountered this problem then I apologise, at least any short sides can be used to make parts of the decks and superstructure rather than be a complete waste of material.

I will contact the Editor of the magazine to get this correction published.

I have posted this correction on the Model Boats website but this site appears to be more widely read hence posting here.
Again, apologies it this has caused you any problems.

Agh!........................ this problem gets more curious!
On checking the published plan, I find that the hull side pieces are infact the correct size.  The Model Boats designer must have corrected my mistake on the original plans, he is clearly worth every penny they pay him!
But.... the published plans show the second bulkhead to be behind the hull base cross piece.  My original draft has it in the correct positionahead of this cross piece.  This should allow the sides to accurately mate up with the hull base and bulkheads.
Still my error as I receive a small copy of the plans before they are published to check for any problems in the redrawn plans.  This mistake eluded me and I promise to go over the next plans with a magnifying glass!

You'll still miss it Glynn, it requires a third party to check them out, hopefully by building them from a copy plan. Fresh eyes and all that. Deadlines/Editors are tight though  %)
