Anchor chain advice needed
« on: July 18, 2010, 11:52:54 am »

Hello folks, can anyone please advise me of the 'right'(?) size / shape and where to purchase anchor chain that would look acceptable on my 1:24 scale loyal class fleet tender?
The chain supplied with the kit (13/14 links per inch) looks a little small to me but having said that, I've never been associated with real vessels in anyway so I can't be sure but it just doesn't look to scale. I appreciate the size of chain is dependent on the size / weight of the vessel concerned but from what I remember of the one's I have seen the links are often oval in shape and quite large - I'm thinking maybe 5 or 6 links per inch and oval in shape would look more appropriate but I'm more than happy to be corrected on this.
There are two anchors with about 2x 2" of chain on show between the winch and the hawse pipe covers. ( I can talk metric - but I like old money  {-))

All replies and any information gratefully accepted and appreciated.

                                    Regards to all, Tony.

I am also building a Loyal class tender.  I have installed the windlass, anchors and chain and it all looks scale to me.  And I do have experience with real pleasure boats, up to 42 feet.  The 42 footer, a Grand Banks, had anchor chain where each link was about 3 inches long.

Hello CG thanks for the reply, re the chain links on your 42' craft being 3" in length, hence 4 links to the foot, as the loyal scale is 1/2" to the foot then theoretically 8 links per inch would be scale (I think!) also as the boom chain is 4 links to the inch and remembering also that the loyal were built on a 79' hull is what made me draw a mental comparison thinking that 5 to 6 links being reasonable. However, having said all that "whatever looks right is right" and I can only use what fits through the chain stoppers!  :embarrassed:

All the best with your build, kind regards, Tony.  :-))
