Newbie saying hello - on the hunt for a boat.
« on: August 12, 2010, 02:17:22 pm »

Hello gang :-)

Just thought I would say hello as I've just signed up.
I've been into RC for some years, but always cars, trucks and crawlers, I had a V hull 540 powered boat when I was very young, but it wasnt the greatest and it soon died a water death. Now, some years on and aged 29 I fancy getting myself another V hull (or possibly cat) to have a bash with. A chap on my car forum had a boat for sale and it prompted me to do some Youtubing, and I came across this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSCXhbdJeH0 its seems to have got me all excited about getting back on the water!

I'm after something as near to this as possible, as it ticks all the boxes for me, good looking, fast, good size, fairly simple, brushed motors :-))
I started having a look around for one, but it seems finding one is like trying to find hens teeth lol

Anyway, just wanted to say hello and I'm sure I'll be coming to some of you for help and advice in the future ok2

Cheers,
Simon :-)

p.s called Simon170 cos I drive a highly modified ST170 Focus.

newbie: big boat anyone?

Hi Simon!

Welcome from a fellow newbie just launching onto the well-stocked mayhem pond, I sympathise with your search as I have been looking for something a little different...well big really... like 8 to twelve feet long! A recent attack of the new boatoids has led me, after much head-scratching, number-crunching and graph paper-scribbling to design a freelance lifeboat/rescue craft a bit like an eighth scale Severn, and also a 9 foot (or longer :o) power trimaran, a bit like Earthrace meets the SR71 Blackbird...but which to build! The workshop beckons but has anyone out there built/bought/safely transported such bulky/heavy models...I will find a way but would prefer not to reinvent any wheels!

Best wishes to the newbies, the oldies, the scribblers and the builders :-))

Hi DickyD,

Many thanks for the awesome Mersey link, shows that re building materials there are some hidden gems in the hardware store...one I am experimenting with at the moment is called Selkie Board, basically a 2400mm x 1200mm laminated panel with a variety of awesome finishes and available in either a MDF,  birch ply or lightweight foam core substrate all in 11mm thickness...bit pricey at £130 - £170 per panel but could save us all an awful lot of finishing time and cost: take a look on www.rearo.co.uk

Happy building!

If anyone is interested I have put my Aerokit Sea Rover into the Brightwells Toys and Dolls auction Leominster 8th Sept 2010.  The plans are included as is the Hughes electric (brushed) motor, no reserve.

Hi Simon 170.
You could of course go for an Admiral 40in cat and modify that.

RE Selkie Board.
I believe its called Gator board in the US and has been using for some time in modelling.

                      Quote from other forum
Gatorboard is the same as paper foamcore board, but the coating is a plastic instead of paper.
PVC board is also know as Sintra, and is a bit stronger than gatorboard, as it is plastic through and through.

                                                     cheers   Frank..
