KBIO & HIS" BUDDY"
« on: August 23, 2010, 03:32:59 pm »

Good afternoon! :-)
Following are some photos of my last launch! D10w/ reverse,  local made Boiler 1.5 L ,double burner, gas regulation @ 2.5 Kg and wistle.
Just finished this winter and first test yesterday =  :-))
Those D10 are fantastic and we become addict after trying them. %%
Tiral in my garden pond.

What it looks like inside. I need to bring some more details.

After 12min warming up. Steam in and engine runs good. Gone to the lac!

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Reverse OK! ;)

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
After 30 min , 2 kg pressure and 1/4 turn valve cracked open, back to the shore w/ 1/3 of water left and still some gas left. I'll have to check how long the gas can last.

That was a good day = ready for a pint! %)I hope that you liked it!  ok2
Sincerely!

 :-))

Can you provide some more info on the build, very good looking launch.
The boiler looks very nice, scotch type, local manufacurer or home made ?

I love those D10 : s too, got two Stuart and one Holzapfel - all with stephenson links.

Hello BBJS!
The boat is  "La mouette" built "à clins" (don't know how to say in English): see photo.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
She is 135cm long .
The boiler is lmade by a friend of mine who is building at my own specification. 25cm longx125 large. See water level.
For the D10, we look for old ones and we strip them down for a complete overhaul and we add reverse, water pump or others.
I always try to mix different brand from all over the world. But the world is sometime small and we try something else.
Below photo is my next launch. She will be fitted w/ D10 (always) and a vertical boiler w/ ceramic burner and water pump.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us
I wish this is any help for you! ok2
Can you tell me me about Holzapfel? I do not know!
Thanks and sincerely.

Very nice work. Any chance of seeing them in a video?

But why only Stuart D10's, doesn't it get boring? There are many other interesting engines out there  :-)

Hello KBIO !

Thanks for the info and new pictures.
Do you have any closeup picture on the steam oil separator/condenser ?
Looks very nice too.

Firma Holzapfel in Winterthur en Suisse/Switerland makes some (IMHO) high class steam products since 30 years.
Boilers, burners, gas tanks, oilers and all kinds of fittings, and a variety of steam engines. Among the engines
there's CH110 - a D10 clone made of brass/bronze/gun metal:

NOT cheap...

Not much on internet, you need to order their catalog for 10 Euro.

http://www.holzapfeldampf.ch

I recently bought one of their boilers, Stans, a vertical of Kingdon type. Takes one liter of water, produces 2kg steam/hour,
weigt more than 4 kg...
Not used it yet, awaiting restoration of a compound ( not *only*  D10:s)

Cheers, Bjorn

Good morning! :-)
Thank you Bjorn for the info about this manufacturer. Very nice mechanic , but as you say; not cheap! :o
To answer your questions, I have engines from Anton, JMC, Saïto,PM reseach,..... One of my favorite is the JMC compound . Just a bit hard to eveacute the condensation(need a belt around the propeller shaft) but nice to work with. I even get reverse working good. (not obvious on a compound) See photo:

Concerning the oil separator in this boat : it is more for decoration than real use. I do not want to drop another polemic here, but I am among those who do not oil very much my engines. Basically , I use oil at the begining and virtually nothing after. I put separators in a very clean environment , where motor boats are forbidden. :}
I have entrance of oil separator on the tangente creating a kind of vortex and the exaust in the top center.
 For the D10, I must admit that I am addict to it (I apologize) :}
I'll get soon a AL5 (5cc) for a smaller boat: 115cm. It is a "kind of" D10 but smaller . I'll see if I have any photo to send you.
I hope , it has been of interest for you. I shall go to ATLANTICA (S-O of France) for those who know this meeting, and I shall try to get video to post on the forum.
I hav'nt ask my son to do some on U-Tube for me yet. I am totally useless on new technologies , but I take pleasure to see young people considering me like an old.///.. trying to fix my computer while I am having a beer! O0
Have a good day ! :-))

Very interesting and looks great.
The hull looks very much like the one which I am working on Wide a Wake ,I have changed the decking as I like the open look to the launch.
Steam plant well on the way I have posted the Borderer engine running on air and steam on this site.
Your work has inspired me to push on and finish the project.

Hello Firedup.
Very good looking boat!
Basically same shape that mine. I like open boats also , to keep an eye on steam bugs. And the marriage of wood and copper is lovely.
What wood do you use ? The finishing seems pretty well.
Sincerely.

Hello!
Both of you are good in working  with wood. I guess the Bernhard one's is in mahogany (my dream) Mine is in plywood as I couldn't find descent wood around here.
Your boats will be source of inspiration for me and I'll probably copy some parts of some of them. ;)
To answer your question, Bernhard, I have a good 30 min autonomy with my D10. I definitly  have more but I am still watching everything. My boiler has a volume of 2.8 L but with the burner pipe (w/ return) the water capacity is 1.5 L. The boiler is made by a friend who occasionaly do some in his shop.
I have 2 burners of 140 Gr each and a gas regulateur set à 2 kg. I have noticed that more pressure does not give me more speed. As well as the steam volume delivered through a 1/4 turn valve. I have a top speed with my propeller that is optimum and what ever I do, I waste gas & steam , but I do not  really improve the performances.
The wave I move is always the same. A good engineer will explain it better than I can do. {:-{ They did to me but..... :o
Bernhard, I've seen on another post that you tried to contact JMC. The man does not speak English and does not dare to deal w/ UK. If you need help let me know and I see what I can do.
Thank you for sharing your photos, they will be of a great help to me.
Cheers.

Can only 2nd that WOW....!
Bernhard, may I ask where on ebay do find something like that and may I ask how much one need to pay ?
Spend hours on ebay but never seen anything like it.
Wonderful.

KBIO - regarding the AL5 I've just seen a poor photo on a french forum and my language skills are too limited
to understand whats written...
Is it related to french 'Steam of Paris' DN15 ?
(another "mini" D10 made of bronze)
So yes, some more info and pictures appreciated !!

Good afternoon! :}
The DN 15 (Steam/Biarritz & MVM/Paris) is a copy of the D10 but 15cc. It does not have a good reputation as the castings were poor, the delay was long and the price too expensive. The after sale service was also poor on top of it.
The AL 5 is not a D10 but very similar. It is a 5cc engine designed by a great name in steam in here (Andre Lecomte). It was OK when Andre has his own casting made but same as above ; some has tried to replace the "Master"  by manufacturing it, leading to very poor casting and bunch of complaints.
The problem is solved now for this AL5, as a serious shop took over and can manufacture one (on order for 750€) ( if I remember). The castings are now OK.
I'll see if I can find photos of them.
Cheers.

KBIO - thanks for the link to JPB, seen his enginees in different french forums.
Nice.
I would love to have one of his scotch-boilers.

When will you get your AL5 ?
Please post some pictures when you receive it...

Where can one find the drawings to AL5 (and other André Lecomte designs) ?
Are they available through JBP ?

I'll check if I can find drawings and  I'll let you know where you can get them. Don't know if there "all right reserved" on that!
I'll get photos tomorow also as I ask JPB to put some on his site.
