i have a few shelfs in the garage with ice cream tubs small and large with lids, props in one, shaft in other, nuts and bolts, motors, esc you getting the idea, on a lower shelf i have old plastic what look like the old fruit and veg containers there only a few inches high and perforated, perfect for storing plastic card sheeting. and to store paint clearly a shelf with odd tubs of gloss on but for my air brush pots ( Revell, Tami ya etc,) i have a 4x4" pine strip with holes drilled half way to hold the pots in place along the back of the work bench. I'm not allowed to paint in doors but 'she' lets me build everything else on the dining room table  :} tool are stored on a tool rack drill bits in a similar system to the paint storage , chisels etc are clamped to a back board using the cheap steel tool clamps, nothing special about my work space, but i have limited work area due to the wife keeping her car in there, thats why i do most of my work indoors

Mine needs to be portable so I use a Plano 758 four drawer tackle box for tools and the clear compartmentalized boxes for spare parts, usually one box for each model.
There are lots of ways to organize the clear boxes, shelves, racks, bags they are a pretty standard size for fishing.

my tricks easy, currently full time house husband, so i clean, wash, clean , sort kids, entertain, doctor, clown, battery mechanic your getting the idea, but the wife works 6 days a week leaving only sundays to myself, but thats taken up with a family day out or something similar.( or day to the pond once a month)  so i use the spare room as my workshop. i can't keep taking the children and the dog to the workshop when building not fair on them, where as the spare room has a big bed for naps, tv, and toys since it semis as a kids play room.  :-))

I have little sets of drawers, these are OK for small tools, but not for bits and bobs.

I also tried a fishing tackle box, that I use for larger bits and bobs.

I keep all my smalls bits and bobs in artists storage trays. I can't get pics of them as I am packing sorry.
White plastic boxies about 300x200x20 mm. Lots of square compartments, and a flush fitting lid.
Perfect for small items. I have two labelled for rigging bits, one for deck fittings, one for small screws, one for... well you get the point.

I have 10 all the same, they stack neatly and take up little space.
I have labelled them on the tops and on the front edge, so that I can see which box I want from the pile instantly.

If you have a work area where tools can be exposed (i.e. they don't need to be put away) there is little to beat the tried and tested "peg board", especially if you draw around the stored tool so you know where each goes and what is missing. You can make up your own board from any decent DIY store but there are several commercial systems available.

For small items and parts I like many use little box systems which are readily available at DIY stores or fishing tackle shops. I find open, clip on bins are a bit fiddly and collect dust.

I tend to avoid magnetic clips as they can magnetise tools and seem to dull blades.

An essential for any drawer system is a good labelling system. I use self adhesive labels. A silly little thing to remember is to write the label before peeling it off the backing!

wow this is great I only looked away for a day!  :-))

Thanks for all the suggestions, I don't have enough space to have tools out on display all the time but that would be a great idea. I had found http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=29041 in maplin which is as close as i can get to Tombsy
's setup.
I think I like tigertiger little box pile idea, I will be finding some of those.
I think it is time to go have a good loock around for some boxes at the weekend, more suggestions welcome.

Great stuff.
Here in Oz, we are able to also get larger ones which are stackable with bigger divisions for motors, shafts etc.
