Author Topic: A source for a really good set of f/glass mouldings for a small submarine  (Read 3374 times)

I work as a volunteer for a Maritime Museum which has an underwater gallery with large windows that look out into the harbour. Normally our visitors just get to see the grey mullet that come swimming around attracted by the fish food we drop from an automatic feeder. To add a little variety to the underwater scene we would like a model submarine to sail around amongst the fish. I have an Engel 750ml tank & electronics but we need a submarine. Can anyone recommend a supplier of a suitable model about 36" long - f/glass not styrene and moulded to a very high standard - preferably not with plating/rivet detail and not of a warlike appearance - some sort of ROV would be an option?

Not a huge amount available of ROV/submersible type craft, especially at the size you've specified. A Thundertiger Neptune would fit the bill I think, although this comes complete with everything you need minus a TX and RX. Therefore the Engel tank would be surplus to requirements.

I take it the tank/aquarium you want to sail in is fresh water and not salt water.

What is the range of your building skills?

being a maritime museum aren't you able to rent or buy a real rov? surly this option is available to you, there are many old rov's that are able to be donated to museums for either use of display. you should look into this as there are 2 mini ROV's donated to the Plymouth aquarium when it was first built in 2004 they use them as a working display that kids can control to do a underwater course.

The GNOM baby on the suggested website would be ideal - we can't however afford it.
We did a year or so ago have an underwater exhibition and may still have one of the ROVs that we had on display I don't think I'll be allowed to use a museum exhibit to amuse our visitors however.
The museum gallery I mentioned looks out into the sea - salt water. I make all types of boat models (I used to work for a New Zealand shipping co.) mainly sail & steam (I have a Sherline lathe & mill) though I've just bought a couple of i/c engines to experiment with powerboats.
Thanks for the replies.

sounds a bit odd but some company's will loan you the use of an rov to aid in sales, you be surprised what some company's will give away for free in return for free advertising and potential profit!  be honest its only a email or phone call to find out if they will help, if you say that you want to use it for monitoring boats or sea life , rather then just to amuse the visitors they may get one on that premonition, little white lie never hurts  ok2

Unfortunately you will find that the radio signal won't penetrate through salt water very far if at all.

That's why ROV's use an umbilical.

Hi GJA.
As always the ever reliable German engineers have this one.

              http://www.modelluboot.de/

or you get a sub hull from http://www.modelsbydesign.co.uk/model_boats.aspx

something like the BIBER and convert it

sheerline use to have an ALVIN but I think its been discontinued.

As you have access to machinery you may have to make a plug from wood designed around the 750mm tank size

                   and mould yer own hull.

of course there is always  flea-bay cheap at the price...

I've got a set of Biber mouldings (my father was an ASDEC operator in the war and captured one -even got the pictures) but the management at the museum where I work are a little anti warships. I like the Ballfish design from modelluboot.de but my experience of some commercial f/glass moulding (Kingston mouldings excepted) has not been too great. I've had a lot of good ones but a lot of bad ones as well (I've still got a few that I'd almost pay people to take away). What I'm after is a personal recommendation from someone who has handled the mouldings and is prepared to vouch for their quality.
Also I thought of the Thunder Tiger and it looks right but (nothing against the firm - have even just bought one of their outbards) but it would not look quite right for a museum to be running a plastic RTR vessel.
As to telling little white lies - with my luck I'd get caught out in 2 minutes flat!

Got some great advice for ya .. give up looking for a sub to run, your going to run it in salt water... which is not good for a model sub as it is.. then you have the whole 9 yards of building working ballast tanks & all the rest of the gubbins.

As a volunteer i think perhaps your time would be better spend doing something a little more 'helpful' rather then spending the best part of half a day getting a model in the water making sure it works then having your 15 Min's of fun to 'entertain visitors' then spend the rest of your day packing it up, i know for a fact if i saw a sub floating around a murky glass outlook into the harbor i would wonder why i spend £50 getting a family ticket to see staff messing about with 'toys' when there meant to be working, granted that i enjoy models in all forms but look at it from other visitors perspective, they don't know your working for free, there instant perception will be 'is this what my moneys paid for? whys this guy still got a job, where's the manger!'

For your needs an ROV is really the only option that's going to work effectively and be worth looking at, my advice is to scrap the idea stick with the springer tug or small boat idea for the kids.
You have to factor time and cost into the equation when building any model and when it comes to subs your looking at more then any other common build, if its a personal build that you want to take there every now and again then you should look at kit conversion, like the current Revell gato class that's on offer at £30, its a Nice sub i have one takes up my entire bedroom window :-)) but i wouldn't want to drive it around murky salt water or any other sub for that matter.

stick with one idea at a time go with the springers for the kids and put your efforts there, i have done charity work in the past and regularly do 180mile 3 day hikes ( at cost to myself )  for the Cornwall air ambulance service, believe me when i tell you doing something for someone else with out my own needs in the way makes it worth while, if you spend your time thinking that some idea's for 15 Min's of entertainment is worth it your mistaken. visitors tend to want to look at the exhibits, the history's or the things there and get up close to items they can't see regularly or won't see again, not some floating stick in brown water.

by all means build a sub, but do it for yourself and keep it to the local club or events don't waste your time trying to entertain other people that wont appreciate the item, they didnt come there to see a model sub or staff playing about, they came to see the real boats and there history's and other items you have there.

you had it right with the boats for kids classes, anything else is a waste of your time as a volunteer.

Hi,
thanks for the last comment - I think you are quite right it's not worth the time at the moment and it's a pity I've already spent so much money on it. Sometime in the future a proper ROV attached to an umbilical cord maybe. The kiddies program should and will take precedence over any submersible. In fact I've (thanks to members of this website) already picked a suitable model that ticks all the boxes and even had an offer from other sources to professionally make the mould so we can use f/glass hulls rather than styrene. A springer tug will also be chosen which will hopefully actively involve our visitors rather than having them as mere spectators. Wish our museum Had a few more of the more historic exhibits you mention and does anyone want a set of mouldings for a Biber submarine?
