Trawler Info ?
« on: February 03, 2007, 08:18:49 pm »

I was hoping someone out there might know a little about a model I have just finished restoring. The trawler 'Patricia'  from Lowestoft (fleet no LT5374) is based on plans published in a 1957 'Hobbies' handbook. The ship is 'bread & butter' built and has been scaled up from the original plans.
I have 'modernised' the electronics/R-C equipment and added deck detail but the ships appearance probably hasn't changed much. The trawler is old but I don't know when it was built.
I was told that the 'Patricia' is still afloat and serves as a maritime museum in Lowestoft Harbour but I can't find any info on that either.

Does anyone have any info on this or similar trawlers ???

I have a model built from the original plans in 1957 by my father. I also have the revised and enlarged plans now produced by Hobbies. The notes issued with the plans say that the original design was taken from drawings from Richards Ironworks of Lowestoft.

Max Buoy,
A mate of mine got an identical one to this, but he's been having trouble with it
, the prop shaft keeps coming away from the motor and the anchor keeps falling
off, do you have any solutions how to stop this from happenig.

Hi jenno

I would advise your 'mate' that the propshaft problem is caused by sailing in the wrong type of water (Bryn Bach lake) and the anchor will stay in place if he keeps away from the concrete quay at Roath Park lake. I think your 'mate' needs too use the rudder more effectively to avoid a repeat of this type of problem.....LOL......

Jenno,

Max's inappropriate use of the rudder is not restricted to this trawler however as a couple of my boats bear testament ;D

Nevertheless, Roath Park lake remained problem free today, and in all fairness, the Patricia looked very good indeed.

Ok sorry for taking my time ( I've been meaning to reply since you put this up !! lol ) but here goes. As a general rule sidetrawlers all have similar deck layout and fittings. I've added photo's below showing typical deck fittings and how the gallows are attached , etc.

One extra detail I'm trying to obtain for the trawler, are some scale nets/boards (approx. 1:32) any ideas??

Netting can be bought at almost the right scale and cut into shape without too much problems. The trawl doors would have been Flat wooden type like the ones below.
