Small Desktop Vice Needed
« on: October 19, 2010, 04:50:39 pm »

Hi All

Does anybody know where I can get a small table mounted vice from please?

I want the sort that clamps to the desk, not the bolt on one.

Many thanks

Have a look at the pages for vices in this catalogue:  http://www.squirestools.com/11-02.pdf

Squires is a very reliable supplier and it is well worth having their various catalogues to hand.

Or try Expotools - their products are available from some local model shops.

I use expotools a lot - if you order before 12 noon you are virtually guaranteed next day delivery.
Only once has it taken two days. They have several in their catalogue.

I recently bought a Stanley one with mutli angle ball swivel head. Not used it yet but looks pretty sturdy. Amazon.co.uk was the best price for me on that one.

Suitable commission to Mayhem if you buy!

 Thanks for the replies everyone.

I looked at the links you supplied and the only one that looked
like what I had in mind was the one on ebay.

Searching the internet using google is a bit hit and miss,it depends what
description you put in as to how many hits you get.

I put Hobby Vice in google today and it turns out that Homebase do them.

I can recommend using a multi-directional vice.

Even if you don't need every conceivable angle in x,y,z,planes the ability to turn the vice through 90 degrees is useful in a small work area.

They have them in the http://expotools.com/ catalogue under vices, pp 62-63

Hi Alan, remember you only get what you pay for, have bought two different models - cheap as chips but for the cost of postage, which would outweigh their value you could have them from me f.o.c.   O0
jaws are alloy, don't line up very well, not a smooth operation and if only using one side of the vice, especially for holding small parts, the jaws tend to 'yaw' i.e. lock up on a taper.
At the end of the day it's down to budget and intended usage, they all work - as always some better than others.

Good luck with your search and kind regards, Tony.  :-))
