Solo sailing ?
« on: February 05, 2007, 07:44:54 pm »

First of all as a newcomer to the model boat world (having served my apprenticeship with model planes and more recently live steam garden railways) I would first of all like to say how hugely helpful this site has already been for a novice like myself, albeit one of rapidly advancing years !
I have already learnt a lot about building techniques from members who say it like it is and whose views are not coloured by commercial interests.

From initial contact with one or two model boat clubs in my area I have found a ready welcome which further adds to my enthusiasm.

One question I would like to ask is what is the general situation in sailing our boats on ponds, lakes or even canals ?  Whilst the practical and social benefits of club membership are very attractive I can well see situations (like when on holiday) when it would be good to have a sail on a convenient stretch of water.

Hi John S,
Welcome to the Mayhem Forum.

I personally use the 'It's OK until someone tells you differently' method.

Just don't get angry if someone tells you to move on.

Regards Bob

It all depends very much on who owns the particular stretch of water.

To be completely above board you should find the owner, contact them and ask permission but that may well be a very difficult thing to achieve especially with Water Board situations or local councils.

You can't get in too much trouble by having a go until someone tells you differrent however should your boat become stuck and you have to retrieve it you may well find yourself in the realms of trespassing and that will be looked at entirely differrently.

Hi  - many thanks for your thoughts, I suppose its a case of using common sense and sailing from a shore with an on-shore breeze !

If you know where you are going, have a look at

http://www.modelboatlakes.co.nr/

If you know of sailing waters that are not on the list, add them and let the rest of us know.

Many thanks - a very useful site that threw up a venue just 20 minutes from home and where a local club also hold a twice weekly meeting - the best of both worlds. I am sure the site will be of equal benefit when away from home territory.

Of course, the other advantage of joining a club is that the subscription will include Third Party Insurance. Usually, but not always, the insurance will cover you wherever you sail.
