Waveney Lifeboat - Aerokits Model
« on: November 02, 2010, 02:53:12 am »

Hi Guys
So far I have stripped down all the old paint off this Aerokits Waveney Lifeboat, what a job, The Main Cabin is a removable piece which allows access to the motor compartment.  The front bonnet for want of a better word is fixed to the front deck.  This makes for an bad join between the main cabin and the bonnet.
I intend to make this into one unit, now my question is ? how do I join this to the front Cabin and how do I secure it to the front deck.  Will I need to make an opening into the front deck and add suitable coamings so that it sits properly?  The Front Cabin and bonnet really should be one unit as the handrails are attached to the front cabin, I will need to build up the bonnet slightly and make certain that it fits the deck camber.
Any ideas will be most welcome

from memory the cabin used to be built as a single section , and be completly removable , there should be a coaming around the edge of the deck / cadin area , secured to the deck which assists in keeping splashes of water from entering the hull ! i know lesro models have most of the original plans for aerokits models , if you are able to post some pictures of the offending sections this may assist in some answers as to the best way to join the two sections back together . jon

Hi Jon
Thanks for the info - I intend to post some photographs in the near future.  At present stripping off the paintwork on the hull as I want to show this in the "nude" so to speak.  Will try to get them done this week

Hi Jon
Good to hear from you
Hopefully here are some pics

The Survivors Cabin reqd 470 escutcheon pins (brass) to be inserted, I still have the rear of this to do.
The front bonnet and Main Cabin will need to joined together, by some means, I may heighten the front bonnet as I feel it is a "bit shallow" plus it will need to have a lot of "rivet" details added.  Still a lot of prep work needed to get it to the standard I want.
More later

are you cutting the bonnet flush with the deck ? it would then need a coaming around the inner face of the deck to drop the modified cabin over . it looks as though you should be able to fit a couple of long lengths of timber on the inside faces of the two sections of cabin to strengthen the joint ?

Yes it is my intention to fit some hardwood strips on the bottom edge of the bonnet to heighten it by about 1/2".  The I will fix, temporary, some thin bits of wood to the inside edges of it, this will give me the guidelines so I can mark the foredeck and thus cur out the right aperture and fix coamings to this so that the bonnet, without the temporary strips will now fit firmly over the coamings.  Probably my project for next week as I am a slow worker and like to think things through.  Better to solve the problems before they happen than to try and fix when they have happened.
Thanks for your interest - will keep you posted

good thought , its easy to remove material , can be a little tricky in putting it back again ! you could always leave the bonnet at the height that it already is , but cut through it 1/4 inch above the deck , then fit a small coaming around the inner top surface to allow alignment / provide a snug fitting front section ?  ive made more than one model this way as it ensures the cabin fits tightly over the deck app0iture !

Good thought, the main thing I want to ensure is that I form a good seal between the two units.  I still favour cutting an aperture into the front deck and fitting say 1/2" coamings all around and smearing them with vaseline prior to fitting the bonnet.  With so much snow around up North, 10" at last count (midnight Friday) I don't think I'll be going far so may get some work done this weekend 8)

why no sailing , ive been to the lake saturday morning sailing my seawind , yes it was cold but enjoyed the fresh air ! also gets me out of the flat & away from my current projects . so is there any of your equipment under the front bonnet that you need to get to often ? ive recently finished a pair of smallish launches , the wheelhouse roof is held down with 4 screws , the motor is down in the hull , but ive put the receiver on the back wall of the wheelhouse ( its 2.4 ghz so dont need to get to it ) , maybe an alternative way of working ?

Firstly I'm up in the FROZEN NORTH, Killingworth Lake completely frozen and I mean Frozen, 12" of snow where we are, roads bad, hardly been swept or gritted, despite reassurances from Council that there is no shortage, see National TV coverage.
I don't know yet what I am going to put inside the boat, battery wise, may go for lead acid gel type, 6v or 12 volt.  So I like to have plenty of access, don't like keyhole surgery. might put speaker under bonnet as I like the idea of sound effects, ship to shore comms, engine sounds etc. SWMBO wouldn't allow me access to dining table and use of use of dremel and its far too B-------y cold to work in the Shed, would have to dig the door out anyway.  Been looking at the details of the inner Main Cabin and figuring out how to fit the various consoles, radar unit, radio comms etc.  Problem is I only have photographs to work off. but will get there in the end.
How is your build coming on?
Cheers

well no snow down here YET ! all builds are slow at the moment , ive done a little grp work on both the fantom and the wee nip ( following an argument with a steel post ) but due to the cold its taking ages to set (swmbo wont let me do this job indoors  <:( ) my spear has had the hull sprayed last week so im starting on the cabin build and may make a start at planking a deck on a huntsman 31 later as im waiting for a new motor for my huntsman 28 to arrive from germany . lots of projects just doing little bits while i wait on resins or glue to set on others ! it helps with keeping the boredom at bay  :-))

Hi Guys,
With the bad weather been stuck in-doors.  I'm looking at starting the interior of the main cabin, this will be built out of Plasticard.  The problem I have is that I only have photos of the various consoles etc.  How big is the Steering wheel and where can I get one?   Does anybody have the measurements of the Scout internal fittings.  Dan (Fatcat) sent me some lovely metcalf diagrams but there is no measurements.  Anyone help? Ta, Cheers, Thank You
