New product review "Rapid fix Welding Glue"
« on: November 15, 2010, 03:22:08 pm »

To start with this is not intended to be an advert,

I recently built myself my second racing Micro Magic, while i was in Australia on holidays I brought some Rapid Fix dual adhesive glue for the project.
I was so impressed with the stuff i thought i would explain to you where i used it and why i thought it was different to other adhesives. Although i built a Micro magic with it i think it would be useful in other projects, I am sure to use it again.

Rapid Fix comes with two components, The adhesive and the welding powder. Firstly the Adhesive sets in three seconds when oxygen is removed from the surfaces so no need for clamping. I found this great for things like making sure the keel box and rudder tube is perfectly straight and that they remain that way. its not so great for attaching the deck as you need a little more time to make that fit perfectly.

The welding powder which can be added to the adhesive is perfect for making seals, fixing cracks and filling holes. I used this to form a water tight seal around the base of the keel box and to form a water tight seal at both ends of the rudder tube. I also used it to fill the small gaps that are left at the stern of the boat when the deck is attached. It dried in seconds and sands smooth. Although i did not need to adjust the rudder hole alinement in relation to the keel box ( there are incidents where this is required) this system would be perfect just fill the hole and re-drill in minutes. I also used both to glue and fill the gap when attaching the keel to keel fin and it required less sanding than the usual filler one would use.

I was mostly impressed with the speed this glue sets hard although not great when on your fingers  :embarrassed: It sped up my process of building alot. I keep it in my tool box incase of a on lake collision.

Hope this may help some one
Cheers Jack Howe

I wonder id ordinary Superglue (Cyanoacrylate)  and 'Microballoons' would do the same thing....

'I wonder id ordinary Superglue (Cyanoacrylate)  and 'Microballoons' would do the same thing...'

They do make a very good lightweight filler and of coarse very sticky and fast curing. Used in a small amount the joint is strong but brittle if given a sharp knock, used to build up a fillet however the surrounding material will usually break before the adhesive, the joint does not however have any flexibility. I love playing with the various combinations of materials to find new ,to me , ways of doing things but always after checking of any hidden dangers and in most cases doing the trials out side. Perhaps the chap from Star Loc who posts on this forum could take this a bit further on this or another thread.

I ordered some of this product from the company I posted yesterday, http://www.repairproducts.co.uk/page69.htm I have received an email to say that the order was posted today with a Royal Mail tracking number, so they seem to be a company that I will be dealing with again.   :-))
I will let you know what I think of the product once I have tried it out.

The glue arrived today, so that was at least good service  :-)
This glue is okay for fixing large pieces, but no good for small detail  :(( So I will stick to superglue and epoxy, at least it is not as expensive.

Do you think the glue is suitable for fixing + sealing things like prop shafts + rudder tubes? The promotional video showed it being used to repair a car radiator, which would certainly suggest that the glue is shock resistant + also not affected by water (even hot water), both of which are problems with superglue/CA.

Edward, I don't think I would just rely on the glue for shafts and rudder tubes, I will continue to use my usual method of epoxy to tack in place and finally fix with P38.

Its a cyanoacrylate.... like all the other `miracle` glues they demonstrate on tv and at shows they usualy have the typical rubbish and waffle about contact with air and anaerobic curing , superglues with water in ( cant happen )...... cyanoacrylates ( and the glue IS a cyanoacrylate )  set on contact with basic surfaces in a thin layer , the powder, its probably not microballoons  , we sell the structural powder for £2.99 called Kapow
