About Phat Phat engine....
« on: November 27, 2010, 12:49:32 pm »

Good evening respected friends, after my leave, i am back in duty, so 400 kms from my home town.by yesterday, i was waking along the street here, and found an amazing toy boat..it was nothing but a pressed steel sheet in to hull shape, and there was a cover at front, like a bonnet.i bought two of them, for half a dollr.inside it, there was nothing, but a caplike thing with a lid, and two tubes was going out of the hull to back.at first we have to fill some water through the tube and place a wick lamp under the lid. so boat will start to run with a phat, phat noise..its too fascinating..so when i am back home willing to make a craft like this.so i need a good knowledge about this kind of propultion.is there anyone , can explain me about its working principle..?  its a kind request..some helpfull links also welcome..i tried in google but was desperating...please..

If you haven't already found out pop pop boats work on the principle of flash steam.
There are several methods of making flash steam boilers one of which is probably what you have purchased in the form of a diaphragm system the other is a kneaded copper coils, both of which use a candle to create the heat source to boil the water in a confined space (which is flash steam, Normal steam takes a little while to produce and is normally pressurised and released into an engine) causing a vacuum which pulls fresh water through one end, boils it and pushes it out the other creating a forward motion.

Marty.."Simple project use here in the US by kids in school to learn Physics".   Sure...but to me its a wonder...and i was wandering for some copper tubes, along with brass tubes, but here no hope..if i want to, have ad rive of 70 kms from home...so i took some nice tubes from a condenser of an old refrigerator, but i lost some skin from my fingers as i tried ti coil it..so abandoned..and waiting to go to the nearest town to get some coper tubes...Heeyyy....and thanks for the great links as i can go for a good study about this...friends, one more doubt...i realized some stirling engines before but none of them are not enough powerfull to pull a craft at speed..is this type also behave like same..?  any experience..?  advices..?  but any how i will make one myself in to a big scale, as i am too addicted to its engine noise..phat..phat...hi..hi...is there anyone to share some pictures of own craft finished with this engine...?  will be a great help...

Rathi, i did build one many years ago for my son when he was in 6th grade , not sure where it is though, using the coil method, i will look when i get home and see if i can upload a photo but until then check out these links.

the only ones that make any noise are the diaphragm types, the coil ones are silent.
They can power a small boat at a good walking speed, but if you are looking for high speed its not there.

Gerald.

Sir, i collected some coper tubes by today, and some brass sheets in to various thickness.so, i am on the way to make an engine. i preffer a diaphram type as it make lots of put put noise.my doubt is this...is there any criteria about the dimensions of the boiler unit..?  by given links i found many types including square ones..by making a big thing can i get any extra effect on propultion..?  help..?

Really as the engines are not very powerful the boat should be up to a max of 30cm in length anything bigger will not move, making flash boilers bigger then described will just be a waste as they just won't work as you cannot provide enough constant heat.
If you want a big engine your going to have to look at the large types of 'flash boilers' but they won't go ''put put'' as you need to connect these types to an engine which in turn connects to a prop.

Sorry but these weren't designed to be made on the large scale, you have to remember they was designed for kiddies during the 1920's to be made from a tea candle and a old tobacco tin.

You can however make duel engine systems with 2 coils or 4 in a 30cm boat hull and use some fire lighter to boil all the boilers at once, this is good for making them go faster but not by much as they burn out very quick.

Hi,

Please refer to the thread "Flash steam plant control" for an in-depth discussion of large flash / monotube boilers for the larger engines.

On a point of information, the water goes in and out through both ends of the coil - it does not circulate.  You can make engines using a valved (car windscreen washer valve) inlet facing forward, and through translucent tube (ie silicone) you can see it working, but putting a valve in the outlet seems to cause too much drag. See experiments by Toby Churchill (who he?). Steve Midson et al in MB about 20 years ago. I must re-commence my experiments, but now I'm retired there's so much to do.....

Friends..thanks for the valuable advices and links..by last day i compleated my put put boiler and tubes, soldered with my soft soldering gun, and tried in water...after a few minutes nothing happened but i could hear a GLU GLU noise from boiler, for some time, and then the boiler unit drops off from tubes...so sad now...but now i am studying a lots about this engine and will rectify the faults with me...the main problem is with me is muscle power...i cant hold pliers and tools for a long time as my skin tears off ..oh..if i was a boy!!!!!   now i am in a dream to full fill my put put boat, and too thanks for the idea of using a valve from car washer...i will try it..but i have to overcome the riddles of my engine...after that...put...put...hayyyy

Hi,
Did you make sure that all the tubes and boiler where full of water before you placed it in the water and ensured that they stayed full as you placed it into the water. If not, then the tube and boiler will not fill with water and the heat will melt the solder. Had one of these as a kid, way back
cheers

Oh..have to fill water at first..?  oh..i lost the unit..as i tried to weld it with heavy carbide gas welder, from a car tinkering shop..the whole boiler unit is destroyed..so i am trying to make a new one...but my purchased boats are working well...

Rath

This fellow is a friend of mine - Daryl Canada- he lives in British Columbia Canada also..He and others make some very sophisticated pop pop ( put put) boats  He has a whole series of videos and is a good narrator.

He makes some amazing versions of these engines.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvlM-_glZ_g

Be prepared to watch all of his videos-- he really pushes the envelope and his test "tank " shows how fast some of these large scale boats will go---ENJOY

Hi,

The other approach is the steam jet engine, which is like the put-put boat, but with an electric pump supplying high pressure feed water into one end of the tube, which  avoids sucking cold water in the discharge tube. This is a continuous process and doesn't cycle like the put-put engine.

See thread

http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=24270.0

This a current project, along with others, and is being developed further, now that I have some understanding of jet propulsion.
