Shaft positioning on the ARUN lifeboat
« on: December 30, 2010, 09:23:40 pm »

Hi there,

Has anyone built the MBD 52" ARUN lifeboat. I am using two standard MFA 800 mors (to start with) and the Sitek propeller shaft and if there is anyone who has a similar arrangement and has the shaft positions, then I would appreciate the info, ie from aft to the hole, the distance between the shafts I have already. Thanking all for the info already recieved - Gordon  ok2

Would you have not been better off posting this under Lifeboats? That section covers mods building etc. John.

Hello, Yes, the shafts are in semi tunnels, if you get the plans from Poole you will see. The "tunnels" go a good way forward, blending in and becoming more & more shallower. I have never seen them on any commercial model hull. I have often had to cut a commercial hull & graft in the correct profile also do not forget that the Rudders are NOT in line with the shafts. That is so that they can withdraw the shafts without disturbing the rudders, Nemesis

not running the shafts in line with the rudders is a good idea and one ive been doing for years , save loads of headaches having to reset rudders !

Hi there all, Holyhead boatyard wouldn't let me take close up photos 'health & safety'. Obviously I'm incapable of walking across a yard without being seriously maimed or injured now I've turned 40.  ;D  As luck would have it I've come across some pictures of the ex-Penlee Arun on Ships Nostalgia some of which are shown below. The link is below but you may have to scroll around for them as they are in bit of a random order, not sure if you can view them if not registered? (free anyway) Hope these are of some use, cheers, Dave.  :-))

Hello, I am glad you have the photos as it shows the semi tunnels that I was talking about, I have forgotten the number of "discussions" that I have had over this subject. Some people must never get a set of plans from Poole when building a Lifeboat. On the subject of no access, try taking some of your work (models) or your photo portfolio the next time you visit, it tends to show that you are not a timewaster, good luck.

Hi there Nemesis, I'm usually pretty persuasive and get in anywhere including RN, Army and RN bases with an escort but they weren't playing ball. I told them what it was for and that we help raise funds for RNLI etc but I had to admit defeat in the end, real jobsworth. There's always one! Cheers, Dave.  %%
