Help Itentifying Some 1/1200 Resin Model Merchantment
« on: January 07, 2011, 06:44:40 pm »

Hi,

Am *very* new to this.. So be nice...

I recently inherited an extremely large fleet of 1/1200 ships, including Triang Minic (which I know about..) and a vast fleet of resin models that my late father had been working on.  Some digging has revealed these to be Len Jordan kits.  But these are poorly documented online.

To cut a long story short, I am now selling off some of the duplicates and spares from that collection on Ebay, but I am struggling to accurately identify the ships involved.  So I am hoping that the combined expertise on this forum might be a useful resource to help me fill in the missing pieces.

The ships are here.. http://www.dropbox.com/gallery/13288388/1/LenJordan?h=052c3b

I have managed to ID the liners.. But the merchants are a complete mystery so any help you can provide is hugely appreciated..

Thanks in advance to all.

Oli

0146 is probably an Ellerman City Class e.g. City of Port Elizabeth - there were four of them.

0151 looks like one of the Fyffes Banana Boats Camito or Golfito

Colin you're a legend.  I also have a pile of empty boxes with names on them... Both of those match up, which means we are on the right track thank you!

Reina del mar in Union Castle colours
Edinburgh/Pretoria Castle
Empress of Britain/England, depending on the window arrangement under the bridge wings.
Northern Star
Pre war Port Line, Port Lincoln/Dunedin?
Ben Line – post war
“A” class Blue Funnel
Clan Line wartime built – Clan Allen/Alpine?
T&J Harrison Liberty, Scholar?
As above – Wanderer/Defender
Furness Withy – Pacific Stronghold/Unity?
Last one not obvious but probably Dutch

Thanks folks nearly there then it seems.. (The first is indeed Stirling Castle btw)

They're not Triang, they are Len Jordan Resin models that my father hand painted to accompany our shared love of the Triang ships.  I've got literally dozens of them now, but these were either duplicates or spares so I'm selling them on to a loving port so i can fund the last couple of Triang ships to complete his postumous collection for him...

Happy to post photos of the not for sale ones if anyone is interested.. They are beautifully painted.. Far better than anything I could acheive.  I'm turning my clumsier hands to creating a display case for them instead...

Cheers

A bit busy tonight so just noted the two obvious ones, thought the liners had already been identified.

They do look nice when they are in a wall case, here are some of mine.

That's a lovely selection Colin.. Are any of them Triang or are they other brands too?  (I'm new to this beyond the triang range..)

Was going to do something diferent with the Triang stuff I've inherited, and make a top down display case of a a dock scene from an oak Coffee table..  Work has only just begun though...  (The rest of his hand painted models already have pride of place in a cabinet..)

I'll have to see how much the duplicate merchantmen go for, but I only have one Triang ship left to complete his collection.  Feels like a fitting tribute.

Sorry Ben.. They were 1950s / 60s toys... (Some were made later by Triang Hornby.. And more recently modern ones too...)  But the original range can be found here:

http://www.tri-angrailways.com/Ships_index.htm

One more to get!  (And a navy of hundreds of hand painted Merchantment to sort through..)

As a kid I used to have everything that Triang ever made including all the harbour parts to make up a big dockyard layout. I was also heavily into Naval Wargaming in the late 1960s, we used to hire village halls to fight out battles with 1:1200 and 1:1250 scale warships on the floor, some imported from Germany and the US, others being home built. We had a lot of fun refighting Jutland and other major battles.

Most of the models eventually ended up in the loft as the family came along and in the end I decided to sell the whole collection and reinvest in good quality white metal liners, mostly from German manufacturers. These don't come cheap, around £50 - £80 being typical and many of mine are no longer made. At the moment I have about 40 which are all of ships that I find attractive or have a connection with such as the ex British India troopship that took me on a school cruise in 1964. My latest one was brought by Santa and is the Union Castle liner Carnarvon Castle.

Colin,

Thanks for that, I am still piecing together the various manufacturers etc..  My story is simply that my father had a good deal of the Triang Ships, and he let me play with them as a kid.  Over the years they went back into storage, but he carried on collecting, building and painting the ships of his youth in the same scale...

Since his death earlier in the year I have been trying to complete his collection of Triang... And I am now only short the Franconia and the semi mythical commando carrier.  I also inherited all his beautiful hand painted Len Jordan models which you have been helping me ID.  He was profilic, so I'm selling the duplicates in the hope of funding a Franconia at some point soon... (I am guilty of still building enormous harbour models even now in my 30s.)

It's nice to see such beautiful models so well displayed...  For Ben.. Here's the Triang (minus some of the harbour stuff) from
yesterday when I was sorting out the duplicates / missing pieces..

Couldn't get the link to display I'm afraid.

I used to have a Franconia, they are very rare as you will know, like the Aquitania. I also had the Commando Carrier but it was basically just the standard moulding with some stick on flight deck markings.

With the exception of Vanguard I always thought that the merchant ships, and particularly the liners, were much better than the warships. I still have a Nieuw Amsterdam and a Caronia.

Colin... Try this one (It's a bit blurry..)

http://www.dropbox.com/gallery/13288388/1/Minic?h=096843

I agree about the Liners and merchantmen.. I am very fond of the Amazon/Aragon/Arlanza.. Solid and chunky buy also detailed..  I am also pretty proud that they have survived two generations of play from my Father and I..

Last bit of help then... I've decided (with a heavy heart) to sell of a load more of the handmade ones in the hope they'll find a loving home with a collector somewhere...

Can you be of any help with any of the painted models here: http://www.dropbox.com/gallery/13288388/1/LenJordan?h=052c3b  - I've managed to sort out the Mauretania in cruise colours.. But the merchants as always test my knowledge to the maximum...  (Ignore the unmade kits, thankfully they all have their notes!)

Once i've id'ed as many as possible I'll list 'em on ebay in the hope they find a new home port...

Thanks again for all your help...

Nice to see all those original Triangs again. The very first thing I ever bought was the lighthouse which was my 6d pocket money for the week.

With regard to the resin models there is a list of Len Jordan models here.
http://www.collectableships.com/models/LenJordan.htm

From a quick look at your photos my comments would be:

Row 1 3rd model looks like an Ellerman ship
Row 2 3rd model has a Lamport and Holt funnel but it isn’t the Bronte on the list
Row 2 4th model, almost certainly the Glen line ship Glenogle
Row 2 5th and Row 3 1st Cunard Media or Parthia after the dummy funnel was removed
Row 4 2nd model, looks like Furness Withy, possibly Pacific Northwest
Row 4 3rd & 4th model, almost certainly Shaw Savill’s Gothic

Colin.. Again I find myself in your debt thank you.

I have located most of them now and listed them on Ebay.. I'll be very sad to see them go, but I have a move coming up and its better to see them go to folks who will love them, than keep them in their boxes in the attic.

Meanwhile I've located a Franconia that needs some refurbishment.. So I'll probably donate the proceeds from the rest to charity.

All the best.
