Dremel Hobby Stylus Multi Tool
« on: January 25, 2011, 07:29:09 pm »

I'm thinking of buying one of these  http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dremel-Hobby-Stylus-Multi-Tool/dp/B002LARRQM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=diy&qid=1295983568&sr=8-1 ,as i find my Dremel 300, with it's mains lead, just to clumsy..

Has anybody got any experience with the Dremel styus as I have heard mixed reports of it's reliabilty

Martin,The Dremel catalogue lists that one as discontinued. Maybe the 8200 10.8V replaces it....

hi, the pistol grip one is discontinued. I bought one about two years ago, and returned it twice for replacement because the battery would not charge.
the instructions seem to give the idea that you can leave it in the holder, so its fully charged when needed. bosch who deal with replacements say no, its not to
be left on charge all the time. the item is non-serviceable, and on the second replacement was sent the pen type one, which so far has been perfect.

A few of my fellow modellers have dremels, they seem to be quite happy with them, "providing" you are not going to use it for any length of time. in other words, dont over heat it, or the motor wont last very long. If possible, try using a cordless drill for the majority of jobs, using the dremel for the more finer and more delicate stuff. Dont simply use the dremel for drilling holes or major sanding/grinding tasks.  not if you want it to last

Tell me about it.

Has something to do with some batteries are liable to explode in aircraft at altitude??????????????

Digressing, actually had bought and paid for a couple of batteries only to receive email that sale was cancelled unable to dispatch to Australia.

Amazon UK is most likely the same no batterry stuff to OZ, at least by aircraft.

Europe is fine because it can go via the tunnel. <:( <:( <:( <:(

The Dremels don't use Lipo (lithium polymer) batteries, but use lithium-ion types, which are unlikely to explode in an aircraft. In fact, it's highly unlikely Lipos would, either. If Li-ion batteries were liable to cause damage at altitude, every commercial flight would be at risk, because most cameras etc now use this type of battery.

I don't understand the thinking behind such a ban {:-{

Me neither.

You would think they would use surface mail instead of Airmail.

All those suppliers who won't use surface mail/delivery and only use Airmail are missing out on sales.

My pal Jimmy in California, his son is a Captain for Delta Airlines and was telling me that cell-phone batteries and such are permitted on board due to the fact that the passenger cabin is pressurised, whereas the cargo bay is not. Apparently, a Delta flight was brought down over the Indian Ocean with the loss of everyone on board just because a battery in the non-pressurised cargo bay had exploded. I'm still not sure if he was just jiving me, but spooky stuff nonetheless.

I would not discount that as a reason.

There has been comment on this forum and on the web of the "New geneartion" batteries exploding whilst being charged etc and the reports of batteries exploding in lap tops.

So the simple solution is, over react and ban All batteries.

Which may be fair enough but why not use surface delivery systems where the batteries are not subject to de pressurizing etc.

Good question. But you can bet your bottom dollar that it has something to do with greed/money/stupidity.

Works for me....BTW a Japanese company set up a battery plant in europe; as battery are heavy and low value.

Shipping a ton of batteries airfreight against a ton of plasama tv's = no contest!

Interesting posts these, will have to make enquiries when back at work Monday, my work is cargo screening at one of the main airport cargo hubs in Britain servicing the biggest logistics firm in Europe, batteries go out abroad by the box load.

Think we will find that is OK as they are packaged as cargo lots.
Problem must be, if sent by Airmail as PMK mentions, must be to much effort/cost/greed to package the batteries to withstand pressure drops.

Maybe it's economic over a short distance, but lots of AA,s from the far east doubtful... Philips/Sony, last time I checked, had a big battery plant in Belgium. Duracell PP3, Belgium....
