Severn Class Lifeboat - Work in progress.

Hi Everyone,

I thought I would post up some images of 'work in progress' of my 1/12 scale Severn Class lifeboat.  This model is based on the Severn Class currently stationed at Cambeltown, Scotland.  This is a multi-media kit from Speedline Models, with drawings bought directly from RNLI.  You need to be very organised to build this and spend some considerable time photographing the real thing, only then will you be able to make sense of all the etched components that Speedline produce.  It is an amazing kit really.  Other projects have got in the way, so this year I am going to spend some concentrated effort on the Severn.  Currently finishing off Model Slipways 'Sentinel'!

Anyway, please see attached photographs - as you can see I have a very long way to go!

Best wishes to all

Paul

I have been building a (speedline Trent) on and of for a couple of years, I got fed up with the lack of build instructions and the
not on plan modifications. I visited the boat I am building in Whitby and was allowed aboard to take as many photos as I liked.
This was on enormous help and has given me the incentive to continue the build.

Hi there Paul, looking good! I've got one of these to get started on soon. It's more of a semi-kit really, relying heavily on RNLI plans and photos of the particular boat you're building. I'm basing mine on Holyhead's on Anglesey, North Wales which I visited and took hundreds of photos of last month. I bought mine off a friend and have got a bit of a head start as it has the motors, shafts, rudders and skegs already fitted. It's a nearly complete Speedline kit, just need to sort out 'T'sections for the kickboards and a bow thruster (which one are you using?). Will have to sort out a decal set too. Looking forward to seeing more of your build, I'll be starting a thread too when I get cracking on with it, hope to see more soon, Dave.  :-))

Dave

When I built my 1/12th Severn about four years ago I fitted a bow thruster (sorry can't remember the make) and it turned out to be totally inadequate.

With my 1/16th Severn I fitted a bow thruster by Raboesch and the boat will turn on a sixpence.

So I would recommend one from them, just bear in mind that there's a lot of weight to turn around particularly if it's windy ,so go for the largest size possible in keeping with the dimensions of the boat.

Hi Paul

Your boat is looking good. I've had the kit for a long time but still haven't started it yet. I'm slowly gathering all the items I need to complete the build before I start but can't decide what motors to go for, which one's have you chosen?

Regards

Hi Paul,

I built the Campbelltown boat and had it in the water with the real thing. I have loads of photos and measurements together with other info. My boat is slightly different from yours as the boat was refitted in about 2009.
My boat is pictured on the speedline website and on model mayhem Wicksteed park show page .
If I can be of any assistance please feel free to get in touch. I dont know how to do this without revealing my contact details to others rather than just you.

 regards Ian
