TVR1A Steam conections
« on: February 19, 2011, 01:50:26 pm »

I have just got a kit for the TVR1A engine and notice that the steam and exhust pipes are plain.
A 5/32 nipple will fit in the pipes I have thought that I could solder a nipple with nut in each pipe
Is this a good idea.
silver or soft solder I dont want to distort these fittings

Hi there
I have a TVR1A and I did what you're suggesting.  Don't forget to put the nut on before soldering the nipples!   ok2

In my opinion silver soldering is essential for steam connections.

Definitly, put a nut and nipple on the inlet side, :-))  on the exhaust side you can use a silicon hose to the condenser.
Always use silver solder for all things steam. O0

In my opinion, while silver soldering is to be recommended, it is not absolutely necessary unless superheated steam is used. There are a variety of soft solders which are made for higher temperatures, some even including silver. I use one of these with silver for delicate parts (like 2 mm pipes), where silver soldering would distort or even melt the brass.

Hello! :-)
I agree totally . O0
I definitvely use siver soldering on high & hot steam pressure side. From boiler to engine.
But soft silver on gaz lines (away from burner) of 2mm.
Regards. :-))

I use silver solder on ALL pipe connections that way I don't have to think is this going to hold if I change my mind and use a supper heater, I always use it on gas it is just not worth using soft solder it can be to dangerous.you never know when plans change and you want to run supperheater and you cannot go back and silver solder over soft solder it will not take and 2mm nipples are no trouble if you use a fine flame and warm the pipe first just away from the joint then go for the joint.

Hi Peter
Sound advice, heat the pipe and then move on to the joint.
With soft solder you are stuffed if you wish to make changes.
