New engines for TSEKOA
« on: February 20, 2011, 02:35:17 pm »

Afternoon all,

I'm replacing my twin engines on the Tsekoa, at the moment i am getting 20 minutes on a 12.7 V battery and a 12.4V, then it drains right off, I'm not sure what the engines are as I bought them with them fitted.  :embarrassed: They are controlled by a FR30HX Speed Controller,

What does anybody recommend?

Cheers

If the batts are SLA's and those are the fully charged voltages I would be shopping for new batts not motors

Hi Ned,

I have taken them both out, both are corroded, one has small amount of smoke coming from it (bin)  <*<

I will arm myself with a volt meter I have been meaning to get one, and check the batts, one is new the other normally used in my tug.

The one showing signs of distress could well have been dragging the other one down, making them both look bad, assuming that they were connected in parallel.  Unknown motors could be a problem, but a short run time and very sudden tailing off sounds more like a dud cell in a battery.

Are the Motors corroded with one smoking?
If so the bin is the only option
The battery voltages seem low or do you mean
12V 7Ah and 12V 4Ah
I assume that without a meter you wouldn't know
The fully charged voltages.

I assume both my SLA are running fine, but will check, I have a auto charger, one has been charged Twice 12V 4, and the other in the early tens?

After some research I found them to be Johnson motors 12v,  O0

Johnson make a great many types of motor within any given case size/style.  Some are great for one job, terrible for another, and many Johnsons were sold via fleabay a few years ago that were highly unsuited to displacement boats.  These might be a pair of such.

Hi Malcolm,

I have seen them on ebay, nobody seems to buy them, there always on there, for a temporay measure I put in some RS555?, as they were wired up already, on a 12V, wow did it go,  %) they did get abit warm... on 35mm brass props.

I have dived in and bought a pair of Graupner 500E (1788) 12000 rpm at 12v, should be good.

Afternoon,

After fitting 2 graupner 500E motors rated at 12000 rpm on a 12V battery, with a FR30HX Speed controller, the result was very poor, very slow.  {:-{

The battery 12v was charged and checked with a volt meter

So is the speed controller at fault or the motors?

Helpful comments please.

Just come back from the pond the Tsekoa goes very well now, after a chat with Dave at Electronize, and a good think and look, I just needed to tweek the Speed controller, I didn't think about that.

The running time was well over an hour still with an impressive turn of speed very happy  :-) now to cool the engines!

Thanks to all and one for your help and guidence, learnt loads.
