East Midlands Lifeboat Day & Free Sail Day
« on: February 22, 2011, 10:42:44 pm »

King Lear Model Boat Club would like to invite model boaters to two events we will be holding at King Lears Lake, Watermead Country Park, Near Wanlip, Leicestershire, LE7 1PD in 2011.

The first event is the East Midlands Lifeboat Day on Sunday 5th June 2011 starting at around 10:00am.  All Lifeboaters are welcome for an informal and friendly event where likeminded owners of model Lifeboats can get together for a free sail.

The second event is a open sail day on Sunday 3rd July 2011 starting at around 10:00am.  Again this will be an informal event when all model boaters can get together for a free sail.  All types of model boats are welcome except IC boats as we are in a Country Park and it is the nesting season at this time of year.

There are toilet facilities in the Country Park but no catering or café except for an ice cream van, so bringing your own lunch is recommended.  There are however two pubs within two miles of the Country park where ‘pub grub’ is available.

There is a £1.50 fee to enter the country park, so the correct change will be required when you arrive.

Please do not hesitate to contact the club at [email protected] for any further information and further details about the club can be found on our website at http://www.kinglearmodelboatclub.co.uk/  and further information can be found about Watermead County Park on their website at http://www.leics.gov.uk/index/environment/countryside/countryparks/watermead.

Gray & Marie

***N.B. You need to pay to enter the country park, but then the sail event itself is free***

So its not a "free sail" then, if there is still an entry fee charged?

Surely if you are inviting folk to an event, an invite is FREE.

Greg if you check the links you will find it is leicestershire CC who are charging to enter the park ( i assume for car parking fees - not the
club charging for the event  :embarrassed: :embarrassed: :embarrassed:

I thought that 'Free Sail' in boating terms meant 'open to all' as opposed to a Club Meet
Wicksteed is a free event but we have to pay Park Admission.

Thanks Guys

You're absolutely right.  The £1.50 charge is to enter the country park the same as the Mayhem weekend and also at Kingsbury Water Park.  Free sail means it is open to all boaters but the club cannot waive Leicestershire County Councils' entrance fee.  I just thought I'd advise everyone of the entrance fee so that you can have the correct change available as it is an unmanned machine you pay.

Hi all

I have today unfortunately found out that the entry fee into Watermead Country Park has just been increased to £2.50.  You therefore, need to have the exact change ready to enter the country park as you pay into an unmanned machine which does not give change.

Facilities
There are toilets a short walk from the lake but there are no catering facilities. There is usually an ice cream van on the car park and the Hope & Anchor pub which is close by does good meals but is very popular. Also the Hobby Horse pub does good food which is a short drive away.
What should I bring?
Your boat of course! Wellies! As it's a natural lake it's easier to launch your boat if you have wellies on, especially if the water is low.
Food & Drink - Unless you want to rely on the local pubs, but I'd advise you to bring something yourself instead.
£2.50 for the Country Park entrance.
Location/Directions
The lake is part of Watermead Country Park for those with Sat-navs enter: Wanlip Road, near Syston, Leicestershire, LE7 1PD
For anyone in the UK with valid postcodes the directions will be shown below!
If you leave the M1 at either junction 22 southbound or junction 21a northbound and follow the signs for the A46 towards Newark. At the A46/A607 roundabout (Hobby Horse roundabout) turn right heading towards Leicester. Then take the ramp approx. 400 yards from the roundabout at the Bentley Showroom. At the small roundabout turn left and follow the road along until you come to the T junction. At the T junction turn left and follow that road to the roundabout and go straight on at that roundabout. You will have a large lake on your left and the Hope & Anchor pub 50 yards up on your right. Keep on that road and just before the road turns right you take the sharp left turn into the Country Park. Here you pay £2.50 to enter the park and follow the road through the Country Park until you get to the large car park and you will see King Lears Lake straight in front of you through a large gate.

47ft Barnette Neil

As far as I am aware Bob there was no 47 ft Barnett class lifeboats.

They built 4 @ 60 ft, 13 @ 51 ft and 20 @ 52 ft. The only 47 ft boats were Watson class and the Tyne class.

Which boat is the one you have modelled ??

Can I say a big thank you for all who attended today's event, we very much enjoyed it and hope everybody else did too.  We had a great turn out for our first event and hope to run a similar event next year and build on what was a great event today.  Bob's Barnet won the best boat in show today, which was picked by a member of the public and here is the photographic eveidence to prove it:-

More pics will be added later.
