Where to run a nitro boat?
« on: February 28, 2011, 02:22:00 pm »

I've got a pretty fast nitro boat & I live in Basingstoke & I was wondering if anyone knew of somewhere that I could run this beastie. Bear in mind that it does about 50 Mph flat out!

I've looked on the BMPRS site & the nearest to me is Leicester!! I was hoping for somewhere a bit closer than that.
Is there any problems with just running a nitro boat offshore? Don't you have to have insurance?

Take a look at the clubs list on the MPBA website - http://www.mpba.org.uk if you scroll down you will find the clubs listed by County. In Hampshire you will find Southampton, Waterside and Portsmouth clubs. By clicking on "info"  alongside each you will find out what types of boats they cover and contact details. All of these include IC or Multi racing.

If you sail in the sea you don't need insurance - until your boat leaves the water at high speed and hits  a dog or a child {:-{ (it has happened) If you join a club they will include Insurance in your membership fee. If you want insurance to sail in the sea you can join the MPBA direct and this will give you insurance.

Hope this helps

I must correct my suggestion of joining MPBA to get insurance for sailing in the sea. I think that this may be incorrect - you would have to check, but I seem to recall this is excluded for some reason.

For running your model boat in the sea your insurance options are the following
MPBA unfortunately does not cover running in tidal waters, so no good for you.
Private insurance from Walker Midgley £18.35 for 2 million public liability or £25.90 for 5 million.
OMRA new member £22 then renewal £12. But the committee do not understand what the insurance cover that they have. On their web site it states is "Fully comprehensive insurance cover". It is not ! Also with other practises that are highly questionable.
BMPRS new member only £10.00 and renewal only £8.00.
So to make sure you have the cover you need I believe your best opption is through BMPRS. Whose contact details can be found on www.bmprs.co.uk

Hope this helps you.

Hi Grubby,If you are looking for honesty about insurance you CAN rely on The OMRA committee to supply you with any information you require regarding running your boat in the sea or on lakes ..if you care to visit the OMRA website you can down load a full and comprehensive copy of the insurance policy without any fuss or unsolicited interference from certain posters who have an unwarranted grievance against OMRA

Hi Grubby, of course you are more than welcome to pay over twice as much for your insurance cover in the first year. What cobramax has not answered is his insurance as stated on his web site "Fully comprehensive" ?

Hi Grubby, I don't know how far you are away from Stevenage but BMPRS have a race event there on Sunday April 10th for AA-D class boats. You would be more than welcome to come along, if you wish to race we do require that you become a member so we know you are properly insured. Membership to BMPRS presently costs £10 in the first year then £8 at renewal (this cost includes insurance).
Our Public Liability insurance covers third parties as well as member to member and rescue boat on inland lakes and coastal waters in the UK and Europe (with of course the land owners/harbour masters permission)
Our Public Liability indemnity is for £5 million with a further £10 million Employers liability, be wary of people who quote the larger sum as their Public Liability and also be aware that some quote insurance schedules which offer the products that can purchased as opposed to the actual products that have been purchased (you need to see the up to date policy and insurance certificate)  :-))
If you would like any further information please visit our 'contacts page' on our website www.bmprs.co.uk where you will find details of how to get in touch with us.

HI Grubby,as I have mentioned earlier the OMRA web site offers you the chance to download the full insurance package that they have purchased for members,I believe in the old saying  "WHAT CANT SPEAK CANT LIE" ,you could ask the above society to publish their insurance policy as OMRA have done . if you require any further info on the above you could visit  CORBY MODEL BOAT CLUB site and see what they have to say ...  that says it all.good luck  :} :} :-)) {-)

Hi Grubby
If you want to run your boat you willbe able to do so at Stevenage on Sunday morn 9am till 12 miday. If you don't have your insurance shorted yet you can still run your boat but one of SMBC will have to drive it for you.
Cheers for now
