Customising Impact/Graupner RNLI Severn Class Lifeboat
« on: March 14, 2011, 09:29:32 pm »

Hello all,

Apologies i this is in the wrong place (Mods please move and accept my apologies if it is  %))

My  best friend since childhood is a member of the RNLI Station at Sunderland and seeing as i wanted an RC boat I have recently aquired and, am awaiting delivery of an RNLI atlantic 75 (1 64 scale?) and a Severn Class RNLI Lifeboat which is 1/20 scale and from what i have seen from images looks very very toy like, which i guess it is  :((.

What I am currently trying to find out is has anybody modified one of these aesthetically to make it seem more realistic and more true to scale? from looking at the images i could find of the boat it looks like the mast has been greatly simplified and is somewhat out of scale (As well as the Y Boat on the Severn).

This will be my first forray into model boat building/modifying and am hoping to find some advice from someone with experience with this boat before i start hacking with dremels etc to turn the black windows into glazed ones and modifying the fly deck glazing as it looks like it is very chunky and the glazing is solid plastic with the glass parts painted white  :((

So far my ideas are as follows:

1. Remove black areas of windows and replace with clear plastic
2. Remove white areas from Fly Deck and replace with clear plastic
3. Respray the superstructure in orange and also add grey for walkways etc
4. Replace Y Boat with appropriate model
5. Build new mast from brass?
6. Add running lights and working blue light on mast

Any advice or direction will be greatly appreciated

I would like to explain that the reason I am starting with the models looks first are that I doubt I will be getting it into the water any time soon so the pod motors are not a major issue at present as I am in the military and will be spending almost alternate two week periods in and out of the country  :((

Many thanks
