Can someone (nicely) tell me where to go, please?
« on: March 17, 2011, 01:10:25 am »

Having got the calling to build a model boat (can't understand why as I wasn't listening), I have just realised that I could have at least one major problem. <:(

I know it's not a silly question cos there's no such thing.  Answers on the other hand are a different matter.  Especially from some of you. O0

First problem is I ain't too sure exactly what I am doing.  No problem there really as I can find/ask here for info. :-))

Second is the question.  Once I have completed my project, where do I sail it?  I have checked out the clubs list here and am unable to find a local water.  http://www.modelboatlakes.co.nr/  is up to date as a website but, only lists one location in Herts (Welwyn) & the Essex lakes appear to be out Southend way.  All way too far. :((

I live in Bishop's Stortford on the Herts/Essex border.  I would appreciate it very much if someone would be kind enough to point me in the right direction regarding lakes/ponds and/or clubs.

Thanks

There is a club that meets in Harlow at the Moorhen. There are also clubs at Hertford and Stevenage. You can find details of the latter two on the MPBA web site - http://www.mpba.org.uk, sorry dont have contact details for the Moorhen Club.

I sail at Cambridge, which is perhaps a little far for you.

Hope this helps. PM me if you need more info.

There are two other clubs that may be of interest - Luton and Welwyn Garden City. It will also depend on the type of boat that you are building and want to sail. Many clubs don't allow IC, and some ban Fast Electric.

Your best bet is to give a bit of detail about what you want to do, and then Mayem can suggest kits, plans, shops, techniques, clubs - the whole works.

For instance, steam-driven tugboats are quite different from submarines, and yachts are quite different from off-shore powerboat racers. What got you interested - did you see a boat you liked the look of?

Hi Guys

Many thanks for the response.   :-))

Barriew: It sounds like the Moorhen would be best but a lack of details is not good. :((  I checked the details of the Hertford club & at present that is looking favourite as they meet at Ware.  Unfortunately another problem I have is lack of transport.  Cambridge is a little far but, if my circumstances ever improve, I may take up your offer and PM you.  Either way, I feel sure something will turn up. ok2  Thank you for the input.

DG: I bought an Aziz late last year but am not very far with it.  I intend to make a few alterations so these need to be sorted first.  I also have a Burutu on the bench, which is coming along slowly.  I bought the styrene hull many years ago when my children were children & I had a SWMBO.  Found it in the back of the wardrobe a couple of years ago.  Rediscovered it early last year.  Decided to build it as therapy. {:-{

Not sure exactly what got me interested.  When I was young, as a family we would take the dog for walks along the river & I think it must have been seeing all the river craft moored up.  That coupled with my uncle making a free sailing yacht each for me and my brother.  But I am rambling now. %%

I would just like to say, I have found a wealth of info on this site & shall keep coming back for more.  It is THE best by far.  So be warned!! :}

Maybe, one day I will be able to meet some of you.

Once again, many thanks guys.

Hi Barrie

Thanks for that.  Go to the top of the class!! :-))  I have bookmarked it for future use.

Been sitting here thinking and it just dawned on me that I did actually paid them a visit about 30 years ago.  Only once & very briefly.  Nice to know they are still going.  I'll drop them a line sometime in the not too distant future.

Also, I just noticed that your are in Thaxted.  That's not exactly a million miles from me & I have a friend lives there too.  Couldn't tell you the name of his road though.

Thanks again.
