Does my boiler need a test?
« on: April 16, 2011, 02:58:22 pm »

This is what i hope is a simple question. I have a Saito b 2e boiler. The working pressure is 2 Bar which i
believe is about 29 Psi. The makers bumpf gives an original test pressure of 15kgs/cms . Does this Boiler
need a test certificate? I think it may not as it is low pressure and may be classed as toy like a Mamod.
If it is classed as a toy i would still be happy to pressure it with air or water to what pressure? As a safety test I guess to 4 bar? Am i right? Thanks in advance for your help. John.

If you plan to use it in public places, then you'll find that a test certificate is just about essential, as many places won't let you run without one. Insurance might also be an issue. If you plan to test it yourself at all, then the use of water is essential as it isn't compressable. Please don't try it with air.

John,
If your boiler doesn't exceed the 3- bar limit you don't need a hydraulic test, you will need a steam test certificate.
The 3- bar limit is the total volume of water that the boiler will hold in litres x working pressure.
If you fill the boiler to the limit with no air pockets, empty the contents of the boiler and measure this in a beaker, lets say it's 1- litre , multiple that x 2 bar = 2-bar litre.
I would suggest that you join a club that carries insurance as most clubs will only test their own members boilers.
Best of luck.
George.

Personally I would get it tested. if you are sailing under MPBA rules its a requirement anyway. Also it gives you peace of mind & stops any arguments, as the rules are a little confusing, its far easier to produce your certificate than it is to argue the point with someone lakeside, But thats just my opinion.

You could replace it with a Copper one?

Thanks for the suggestion. I have already looked into a better Boiler with Gas burner. My question was posted
to see if i could use Brass Boiler to start with and get a feel of things. The origanal Boiler and Burner are not
very good from what ive read. I think i will carefully test, use on private Lake. Then upgrade. So i can use on my Clubs Public Lake Thank you for your help and advice. John.
